Yard Management Lead (Night Shift)
Description
As a Yard Management Lead at Tesla, you will oversee efficient operations of a large trucking yard in Sparks and lead hostler drivers responsible for moving trailers within the yard. You own yard flow: trailer movement, layout, and capacity. The role requires organizational skill, leadership, and a competent understanding of logistics and transportation management, with strong safety ownership and clear coordination across Dock operations, logistics, and reliability.
Responsibilities
- Manage and optimize the overall functioning of the trucking yard, including efficient trailer movement and proper organization of the yard layout
- Train, mentor, and supervise a team of hostler drivers on safely maneuvering and positioning trailers within the yard, and provide ongoing training and development to enhance their skills, safety awareness, and job performance
- Coordinate allocation of hostler drivers and equipment so trailer movements are timely and accurate, downtime is minimized, and yard capacity is maximized
- Enforce safety protocols and best practices to keep a secure working environment for all yard personnel and drivers
- Collaborate with reliability teams so the yard and equipment stay well-maintained and operational
- Bridge communication gaps between Dock operations, logistics analysts, reliability, and other departments so yard operations stay smooth and trailer movements stay timely, and generate daily reports on yard activities, yard accuracy, trailer movements, and red tag trailer issues
- Track trailer inventory, use available yard space efficiently, and identify and address operational inefficiencies, bottlenecks, or challenges that impact the flow of trailers in and out of the yard
Requirements
- Several years of experience in trucking or logistics, preferably with a focus on yard management and hostler operations
- Strong leadership qualities, with the ability to motivate and guide a team of drivers effectively
- Familiarity with logistics and supply chain principles, especially related to trucking operations and yard management
- Deep understanding of safety regulations and protocols within a trucking yard environment
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with various departments, drivers, and management effectively
- Proven ability to identify operational challenges and implement effective solutions, with exceptional organizational skills to manage driver schedules, yard layout, and trailer movements efficiently
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with changing priorities, proficient in relevant software for tracking and reporting yard activities, and command of written and verbal English
