Vice President, Software EngineeringRole Overview
Mastercard is seeking a Vice President of Engineering to lead the Developer Workbench, a strategic platform designed to deliver a unified, AI-enabled, end-to-end software engineering experience across the enterprise.

The Developer Workbench will bring together core engineering products, developer tools, AI-assisted coding capabilities, development environments, testing workflows, deployment pipelines, cloud development experiences, and developer insights into one cohesive platform. This leader will be accountable for transforming the Workbench from a set of disconnected tools and services into a productized developer experience that improves productivity, accelerates onboarding, increases adoption of modern engineering capabilities, and strengthens governance across the software development lifecycle.

This is a senior engineering leadership role for a builder, integrator, and enterprise change leader who can operate across product, engineering, architecture, security, finance, learning, and senior technology leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the Developer Workbench Engineering Strategy
  • Define and execute the engineering strategy for the Developer Workbench.
  • Establish the technical architecture, operating model, and roadmap for a unified developer platform.
  • Integrate developer tooling, engineering workflows, quality systems, AI coding capabilities, cloud and local development environments, and developer insights into a seamless end-to-end experience.
  • Ensure the platform is scalable, secure, reliable, measurable, and aligned with enterprise engineering standards.
Build a Unified Developer Experience
  • Create a frictionless developer journey from onboarding through coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
  • Reduce manual setup, inconsistent tooling, and duplicated effort across engineering teams.
  • Partner with product teams to integrate capabilities across the MSBX product suite, and other engineering platforms.
  • Establish feedback mechanisms to continuously understand developer needs and improve the overall experience.
Drive AI-Native Engineering Capabilities
  • Lead the adoption and integration of AI-assisted software engineering tools and agentic development capabilities.
  • Define governance, security, usage, enablement, and measurement models for AI coding assistants.
  • Partner with security, risk, compliance, and architecture teams to ensure responsible and secure use of AI across the software development lifecycle.
  • Measure the effectiveness of AI-enabled development through adoption, productivity, quality, and developer satisfaction metrics.
Own Tooling Governance and Platform Stewardship
  • Establish a governance model for developer tools.
  • Manage tooling standards, lifecycle, versioning, adoption, enablement, and rationalization.
  • Ensure that developer tools are maintained, current, secure, and consistently supported.
  • Partner with finance and technology leaders to provide transparency into tool value, adoption, cost, and productivity impact.
Build and Lead a High-Performing Engineering Organization
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a team of engineers, architects, platform specialists, technical program leaders, and developer experience professionals.
  • Build a culture of customer obsession, engineering excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the team operates as a product organization with clear priorities, measurable outcomes, and strong stakeholder engagement.
  • Develop talent and leadership capacity within the MSBX organization.
Partner Across the Enterprise
  • Collaborate with CTOs, engineering leaders, product leaders, security, architecture, operations, finance, and learning teams.
  • Influence senior stakeholders and align investment decisions with business value.
  • Communicate strategy, progress, risks, and outcomes to executive audiences.
  • Represent the Developer Workbench as a strategic enabler of modern software engineering at Mastercard.

Required Qualifications
  • 15+ years of progressive software engineering experience.
  • 8+ years of experience leading large engineering teams or platform engineering organizations.
  • Proven experience building or scaling developer platforms, internal engineering platforms, DevEx organizations, cloud platforms, DevOps platforms, or engineering productivity functions.
  • Strong understanding of modern software development practices, CI/CD, cloud-native architecture, platform engineering, developer tooling, quality engineering, and secure software delivery.
  • Experience leading complex enterprise technology transformations in a matrixed environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives and align cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong track record of building high-performing teams and developing engineering leaders.
  • Experience using data, telemetry, and metrics to improve engineering productivity and platform adoption.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AI-assisted software development tools and emerging agentic engineering workflows.
  • Experience integrating developer tools across IDEs, source control, CI/CD, testing, deployment, observability, and cloud environments.
  • Background in developer experience, platform engineering, SRE, DevOps, cloud engineering, or engineering enablement.
  • Experience supporting large-scale developer communities in a global enterprise.
  • Familiarity with engineering productivity measurement, developer satisfaction metrics, and platform adoption frameworks.
  • Experience managing tooling governance, vendor platforms, and enterprise-wide technology standards.

In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Mastercard benefits for full time (and certain part time) employees generally include: insurance (including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, disability, life insurance); flexible spending account and health savings account; paid leaves (including 16 weeks of new parent leave and up to 20 days of bereavement leave); 80 hours of Paid Sick and Safe Time, 25 days of vacation time and 5 personal days, pro-rated based on date of hire; 10 annual paid U.S. observed holidays; 401k with a best-in-class company match; deferred compensation for eligible roles; fitness reimbursement or on-site fitness facilities; eligibility for tuition reimbursement; and many more.
