Technical Program Manager — Engineering Software Tools

Description

Tesla's electric motors depend on how well we design, simulate, and iterate – and increasingly on the software tools that make that possible. This role owns how that software gets built: scope, timelines, quality bar, and accountability.

You will not be a scheduler or a status-report collector. You will be a technical owner who has written code and designed architecture, who knows where software projects actually stall, and who drives a team of engineering-tools developers to ship exceptional work on a predictable cadence. You will define what "done" and "excellent" mean here, and hold the line on both.

The role is based in Greece, in a team whose work has global impact on Tesla's motors.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end delivery of the engineering tools portfolio: data pipelines, visualization and comparison tools, optimization workflows, and AI agentic workflows used across the motor organization
  • Drive daily execution – scope, timelines, dependencies, and blockers – with direct, hands-on follow-up rather than second-hand status
  • Establish single-threaded ownership for every active workstream, so each project has one clearly accountable engineer
  • Define and enforce the quality bar: architecture reviews, code review standards, testing, documentation, and performance expectations for high-volume engineering datasets
  • Break ambiguous engineering needs into well-scoped, estimable work, and push back on scope that does not earn its cost
  • Identify and remove bottlenecks, both technical (infrastructure, data access, tooling, CI) and organizational (unclear requirements, cross-team dependencies)
  • Partner with motor designers, test engineers, and software developers to translate engineering needs into a prioritized, realistic roadmap
  • Drive adoption of AI coding agents across the team to increase throughput – while insisting that engineers review and own every choice those agents make
  • Report clearly to leadership on progress, risk, and trade-offs, with no surprise

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 5 years in software development, with hands-on experience writing production code and owning architecture decisions
  • 2 years leading or driving delivery of software projects (technical program management, tech lead, or engineering management)
  • Strong working knowledge of Python and/or MATLAB – enough to read the team's code, review a design, and judge an estimate
  • Experience with SQL databases and large-scale datasets
  • Hands-on experience with AI coding agents (e.g., Claude, Cursor, or similar) in real projects, and the judgment to critically review and own every choice they make
  • Demonstrated track record of raising a team's quality bar and delivery predictability
  • Clear, concise communicator who is comfortable holding people accountable without bureaucracy
  • Comfortable working in a multinational, cross-functional team
  • Fluent written and spoken English

Nice to have

  • Experience building LLM-based tools or agents (e.g., tool calling, agent frameworks, MCP)
