In Egypt, Siemens Mobility is implementing the European safety standards “European Train Control System (ETCS)” Level 1. Spanning 950 km, this project is part of the broader Egypt National Railways Projects and aims to enhance the safety standards, increase the number of passenger trains, and boost freight capacity.

Position Summary

The System Engineer is responsible for the technical management, integration, and delivery of ETCSL1 system solutions throughout the project lifecycle. The role ensures compliance with customer requirements, project specifications, railway standards, safety requirements, and project objectives. The System Engineer serves as the primary technical interface with the customer for system-related matters, leading technical discussions and design reviews while also supporting quantity surveying activities and conducting site surveys to ensure successful project execution.

What are my responsibilities?

  • Analyze customer requirements and develop system and subsystem requirements, architecture, interfaces, and technical specifications.
  • Ensure requirements traceability throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate technical activities across multidisciplinary teams and support system integration, testing, validation, verification, and commissioning.
  • Ensure compliance with ETCS Level 1 standards, signaling requirements, safety regulations, and applicable railway standards.
  • Promote and ensure adherence to project HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) requirements during engineering, site survey, installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Identify technical and safety risks and propose appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Support the preparation and review of engineering deliverables, technical documentation, and safety-related records.
  • Act as the primary technical interface with the customer, leading technical discussions, workshops, clarification meetings, and design reviews.
  • Present technical solutions, manage technical queries and change requests, and support customer approvals and acceptance activities.
  • Participate in and lead project review milestones (SRR, PDR, CDR), ensuring actions are documented, tracked, and closed.
  • Verify that system designs meet customer, operational, safety, regulatory, and project requirements, and support technical audits and assessments.
  • Perform Quantity Surveying (QS) activities, including quantity take-offs, quantity verification, BOQ preparation and review, variation assessment, and support for cost control activities.
  • Coordinate with engineering, construction, and project teams to ensure quantity accuracy, scope alignment, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Conduct site visits, surveys, and field assessments to collect design data, verify site conditions, identify constraints and risks, and support project implementation.
  • Ensure all site activities are performed in compliance with applicable safety procedures, permit requirements, and customer HSE regulations.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documents, specifications, survey reports, quantity reports, engineering assessments, and site safety records as required.
  • Coordinate with customers, contractors, and project teams during site surveys, installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Support project planning, estimation, configuration management, document control, and regular technical reporting to project management.

What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunications, Automation, Communication, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline).
  • Experience in Railway systems, technical requirements, Systems Engineering lifecycle, engineering processes, and railway principles and standards.
  • Minimum of 3–6 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Leadership, communication, technical understanding, and ability to understand and interpret technical requirements.
  • Prior experience with railway projects and knowledge of major railway subsystems and applicable railway standards.
