System Design Engineer

This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of carrier networking environments by developing cutting-edge, optimized solutions that drive efficiency and performance for our customers worldwide. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Marketing, Product Line Management (PLM), Sales, Optical Engineering, and Software Engineering, directly contributing to Nokia's strategic vision.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in engineering, Computer Science, or Physics is required. A PhD degree is preferred.
  • Industry Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience in network planning, optimization or architecture. 3+ years of hands-on experience with 3rd party network design tools (OPNET, VPISystems, RSoft etc.) is desirable.
  • Carrier Network Knowledge: Proven working knowledge of carrier-class networking architecture and systems, including deep understanding of technologies such as WDM, IP/MPLS/GMPLS/Ethernet.
  • Functional Background: functional experience within either sales engineering or product management.
  • Scripting Proficiency: experience in scripting (Excel, MATLAB, Python, etc.) for automation and data analysis.

Technical Skills (Must-Have):

  • Optical Engineering: Expertise in Optical Link Budget Engineering and advanced modeling of optical network performance, including Non-Linear simulation and analysis.
  • Capacity Planning: Knowledge of Capacity Planning optimization and Layer 1 networking principles.
  • Scripting: Excellent scripting capabilities, advanced Excel proficiency, and SQL experience.
  • Standards & Trends: Familiarity with current industry standards and emerging trends in telecommunications.

Technical Skills (Desirable):

  • DWDM Systems: Prior experience in Provisioning, Installation, and Testing of DWDM systems.
  • Programming Languages: Familiarity with Relational Databases, Perl, C++, Java, Visual Basic, .NET, etc.
  • Knowledge of Nokia’s platforms and planning tools (1830PSS/WS-P or 1830GX/TNPS) is a big plus.

Responsibilities

As a Network Planning Engineer, you will:

  • Solution Design: Drive the development of comprehensive network designs and optimization strategies in response to critical Request for Proposal (RFP) and Request for Quotation (RFQ) initiatives.
  • Technical Authority: Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for network planning, providing guidance and support during network planning, implementation, and deployment phases.
  • Technology Evaluation: Conduct in-depth research and analysis of vendor and internal technical specifications to recommend appropriate products and functionalities that align with evolving network requirements.
  • Architectural Innovation: Leverage expertise in network transition strategies to recommend optimal architectural designs for new products and platforms.
  • Strategic Analysis: Perform rigorous analysis of network designs and assess the economic impact of various roadmap candidate features to construct compelling business cases.
  • Enablement & Automation: Develop advanced tools and methodologies to empower sales engineers in efficiently designing and optimizing network solutions for diverse customer needs.
  • Economic & Technology Foresight: Conduct economic analyses of diverse networking architectural approaches and models, while also evaluating the applicability and potential of emerging networking technologies.
