Company Overview

Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation, and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.

Start your career with the Strategic Student Program (SSP)

The Strategic Student Program is our formal internship program globally. You will be mentored by guides and gain invaluable professional experience. At Siemens, SSP interns get access to an international student network and community, career development opportunities with professional growth pathways, comprehensive practical training throughout the program, access to the Siemens Learning Hub and other training materials, and the opportunity to collaborate on exciting projects within a global, diverse team.

Topic: Development of a Topology Optimization Method for Iron Loss Minimization in Electrical Machines.

Position Overview

Topology optimization is a cutting-edge method that automatically determines the ideal material distribution to maximize structural performance. In Simcenter Flux, this approach is applied to the design of complex electromagnetic devices such as electrical machines.

As part of the Simcenter Flux R&D team, you will contribute to expanding our portfolio of optimization criteria, tackling a major challenge: the minimization of iron losses in electrical machines.

Evaluating iron losses is a critical step in the simulation-driven design of electrical machines. Directly incorporating them into topology optimization workflows to achieve their minimization represents both a numerical challenge and a high-stakes industrial goal.

Key Responsibilities

To take on this challenge, you will:

  • Conduct a targeted literature review on physical iron loss models and the calculation of their gradients (sensitivities / adjoint method) required for topology optimization.
  • Design a numerical model and its associated sensitivities within the core of Simcenter Flux, enabling iron losses to be minimized or constrained in a topology optimization framework.
  • Implement the model on relevant test cases and run initial exploratory optimizations.
  • Analyze, document, and challenge the approach: identify model limitations, operating bounds, and key avenues for future industrial integration.

This 6-month internship is based in Meylan (Grenoble area, France) and starts from January 2027.

Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a Master's-level engineering program (Bac +5 / MSc or equivalent) in France, you have a dual background in applied mathematics and software development or computer science:

  • Strong scientific programming skills.
  • Solid foundation in numerical simulation (ideally the Finite Element Method - FEM).
  • Keen interest in optimization techniques (gradient descent, adjoint method, topology optimization).
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic systems physics is a plus.
  • Autonomous, rigorous, and proactive, with the ability to collaborate closely with your mentors and the R&D team.
  • Strong communication skills in French and English to present and document your work clearly.
