Start your career with the Strategic Student Program (SSP)

The Strategic Student Program is our formal internship program globally. You will be mentored by guides and gain invaluable professional experience. At Siemens, SSP interns get access to an international student network and community, career development opportunities with professional growth pathways, comprehensive practical training throughout the program, access to the Siemens Learning Hub and other training materials, and the opportunity to collaborate on exciting projects within a global, diverse team.

Topic: Benchmarking of open-source FPGA placement and routing tools.

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated student intern to contribute to an advanced engineering project focused on placement and routing for FPGAs. In this 6-month internship, you will experiment with open-source placement and routing tools. Your primary mission will be to develop a reproducible setup using containers that will be able to install multiple open-source tools, compile designs for a common architecture, and run them on a large benchmark set. You will be setting up the tools, implementing the benchmarking framework, and making recommendations based on your analysis. Along the way, you will gain a solid view of the state of the art in FPGA placement and routing, an excellent preparation for an R&D career, whether in industry or in academic research

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Survey: Review academic and community tools, and decide on the most promising tools to use, and the metrics to evaluate them (compilation success rate, compile time, wirelength, congestion, timing, ...).
  • Infrastructure setup: Implement a framework to automatically setup the tools, run them, and evaluate them. Use containerization to manage dependencies in a reproducible manner and implement a compatibility layer to read the benchmark data from all tools.
  • Benchmarking & Recommendations: Analyze the tools’ capabilities. Make recommendations on which tools perform better according to the metrics you defined, what their strengths and limitations are, and what improvements are possible.
  • Documentation & Delivery: Package the benchmarking framework into a reproducible framework, with documentation to install and run. Write a final technical report detailing your findings and recommendations.

This 6-month internship is based in Meudon (Paris area, France) and starts from February 2027.

Qualifications

Currently pursuing higher education in engineering (BAC+5) in France, with a focus on electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.

  • Programming languages: you will be working with tools using C/C++ and Python.
  • Infrastructure and devops: compilation of C/C++ programs, containerization, Unix scripting
  • FPGA and EDA: knowledge of FPGA development or compilation flow is useful but not a prerequisite
  • Fluent in both French and English, enabling effective team collaboration
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively with mentors and team members
