Company Overview

Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation, and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.

Start your career with the Strategic Student Program (SSP)

The Strategic Student Program is our formal internship program globally. You will be mentored by guides and gain invaluable professional experience. At Siemens, SSP interns get access to an international student network and community, career development opportunities with professional growth pathways, comprehensive practical training throughout the program, access to the Siemens Learning Hub and other training materials, and the opportunity to collaborate on exciting projects within a global, diverse team.

Topic: Improving the tank free-surface model for a more accurate representation of sloshing and its impact on heat transfer.

Position Overview

Siemens Simcenter is a software portfolio for simulation and analysis of 1D multi-domain systems. The software offers a 1D simulation suite to model and analyze intelligent multi-domain systems and predict their performance. You will be part of the team responsible for the development of solutions dedicated to aeronautics, space, defense, and marine.

Key Responsibilities

Simcenter Amesim provides tank components, used in particular for mechanical and aerospace applications, that compute the position of the liquid free surface according to the motions and accelerations experienced by the tank. Sloshing is a complex phenomenon, characterized by natural oscillation modes and damping, for which the technical literature offers many modeling approaches (equivalent mechanical models such as pendulum or spring-mass analogies, modal approaches, …). The objective of the internship is to study these approaches and improve the free-surface modeling to provide a more accurate physical representation of sloshing.

Beyond the mechanical aspect, the free-surface position directly governs the thermal behavior of the tank: it determines the gas/liquid interface area, where heat is exchanged between the phases, as well as the distribution of wetted and dry wall areas, which drives heat exchange with the structure. By renewing the interface and mixing the liquid, sloshing can break thermal stratification and cause rapid pressure variations (pressure collapse, increased boil-off), especially in cryogenic tanks (liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen) and aircraft fuel tanks. An accurate representation of the free surface is therefore essential to correctly predict temperatures, pressures, and heat flows in the tank.

  • Get familiar with Simcenter Amesim software and the existing tank and free-surface models.
  • Carry out a state-of-the-art review of free-surface sloshing models from the technical literature.
  • Compare these models (physical accuracy, validity range, computational cost, parameterization) and select the most relevant ones.
  • Implement the selected model(s) and integrate them into the existing tank components.
  • Assess the impact of sloshing on heat transfer (gas/liquid interface, wetted/dry wall areas) and on the evolution of pressures and temperatures in the tank.
  • Validate the models on representative test cases and against reference data (literature, CFD, experiments).
  • Document your work and present your results.

This 4 to 6-month internship is based in Villeurbanne, near Lyon (69), and starts from February 2027.

Qualifications

Currently pursuing a master's degree (Bac+5 or Bac+4) in France with focus on mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermal, aerospace, or equivalent:

  • You have an interest in complex systems and physical modeling.
  • You have knowledge of system dynamics, heat transfer, and numerical methods.
  • You have programming skills (C, Python, etc.).
  • You have a very good level of written and spoken English.
  • You have good written and oral communication skills and strong synthesis skills.
  • Knowledge of CFD software (especially for free-surface flows) is a plus.
