The Role
eBay's Product, Item, and Transactions Experience team builds the experiences and services at the heart of the buyer journey. The team owns item and product pages, transaction flows such as auctions and Best Offer, and search-optimized landing experiences.
These systems support hundreds of millions of visits and billions of dollars in commerce. Performance, correctness, security, availability, accessibility, and real-time behavior are essential. The work is highly visible and has direct customer and business impact across markets, devices, and browsers.
We are looking for an experienced full-stack engineer to join our product development team. You will work with engineers, product managers, designers, analysts, and operations partners to build reliable, inclusive, and engaging buyer experiences.
This is a hands-on senior individual contributor role. You will own features and systems from discovery and design through implementation, experimentation, rollout, and production operation. You will also help other engineers grow and contribute to the technical direction and engineering standards of the team.
Responsibilities
- Translate customer and business problems into clear technical designs, delivery plans, and measurable outcomes.
- Design, build, test, release, and operate scalable web applications and distributed services supporting high-volume marketplace experiences.
- Develop maintainable production code across browser, server, API, and data layers while contributing to architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, and technical documentation.
- Own solutions throughout their lifecycle, including observability, capacity planning, rollout, incident response, post-incident learning, and continuous improvement.
- Build systems that meet defined expectations for availability, latency, resilience, security, privacy, accessibility, and cost efficiency.
- Collaborate with product, design, analytics, quality engineering, platform, security, and operations partners to deliver cohesive end-to-end experiences.
- Use data, customer feedback, and controlled experimentation to evaluate product and engineering decisions.
- Improve developer productivity through effective tooling, automated testing, continuous delivery, documentation, and maintainable architecture.
- Identify technical risks and debt, propose pragmatic improvements, and deliver incremental modernization without disrupting customer experiences.
- Mentor engineers through pairing, design feedback, code reviews, and knowledge sharing while helping the team maintain high engineering standards.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development tools, and apply them responsibly where they improve customer outcomes or engineering effectiveness.
- Participate in a sustainable on-call rotation and share responsibility for the reliability of the team's production systems.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including experience building and operating large-scale web applications or distributed systems.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, networking, and distributed-system concepts.
- Demonstrated experience taking substantial features or services from design through production operation.
- Experience producing technical designs, evaluating tradeoffs, reviewing code, and influencing implementation decisions.
- Proficiency with Java and modern Java frameworks such as Spring Boot, including API design, distributed services, and asynchronous or event-driven systems.
- Proficiency with TypeScript or JavaScript, React or another modern component framework, semantic HTML, and CSS.
- Experience delivering across browser, server, API, and persistence layers and diagnosing issues across those boundaries.
- Experience building responsive, accessible, performant, and cross-browser web experiences.
- Experience with automated unit, integration, contract, or end-to-end testing and with CI/CD practices.
- Working knowledge of secure development, observability, performance analysis, and production troubleshooting.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to engineering and non-engineering partners.
- Experience mentoring other engineers and improving team-level engineering practices.
Preferred
- Experience with high-traffic commerce, payments, marketplace, advertising, or other customer-critical systems.
- Experience with cloud-native platforms, containers, orchestration, caching, messaging, or streaming technologies.
- Familiarity with service-level objectives, distributed tracing, capacity planning, resilience testing, and progressive delivery techniques.
- Experience with server-side rendering, Core Web Vitals, internationalization, and WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility.
- Experience with experimentation platforms, feature flags, metrics, and data-informed product development.
- Experience modernizing legacy systems or evolving architecture while maintaining availability and delivery momentum.
- Familiarity with responsible use of generative AI in software development, including validation, security, privacy, and intellectual-property considerations.
How We Work
We value sound judgment, curiosity, direct communication, and shared ownership. Engineers are expected to balance delivery with long-term maintainability, raise risks early, learn from production outcomes, and create an environment where colleagues from different backgrounds can contribute effectively.
