Sr. Technical Writer, Industrial Energy Products
Description
The Senior Technical Writer plays a key role on the Industrial Product Management team. In this capacity, you join a small, high-impact technical writing team producing partner-facing industry-leading technical publications for Tesla’s industrial energy portfolio, which includes battery energy storage systems such as Tesla Megapack and expanding offerings such as utility-scale solar and data-center-adjacent products.
The team maintains and scales documentation for products with a long operating life while enabling new product launches. You will work with product managers, content owners, and global subject matter experts to turn technical input into specifications, design and installation guides, transportation and storage guidance, owner’s manuals, and related technical content published to partner-facing standards. You multiply product capacity for documentation; you do not replace product ownership of technical truth.
As a member of the Industrial Product Management team, you will be required to support multiple projects at once, wear many hats, and constantly innovate while adapting to a fast-paced work environment in a constantly shifting technology landscape. You will join a team with deep passion for changing the way we use energy on the electric grid.
Responsibilities
- Create and maintain high-quality partner-facing technical documentation for industrial energy products
- Prioritize and manage stakeholder input and expectations across the organization, interacting with executives, managers, engineers, and partners
- Lead multi-document publication cycles that produce a clear, customer-facing source of truth for the organization
- Drive content with capacity-constrained stakeholders: be a force-multiplier and exercise empathy within the real limits on everyone’s time
- Manage tradeoffs across a multi-product portfolio
- Use AI as a companion, not as a generative source of truth
- Interact directly with hardware and/or software products to understand how they work to create content more effectively with the end-user in mind
- Manage document creation and continuous improvement as if the documents themselves are products, leading regular meetings with key stakeholders
- Develop, as needed, and adhere to consistent style and formatting guidelines
Requirements
- 5+ years technical writing for complex hardware/systems (or equivalent)
- Portfolio of high-quality technical publications (partner/customer-facing preferred)
- Excellent English writing skills for partner-facing audiences
- Strong project management skills
- Agility and ability to pivot, manage conflicting priorities, drop and take up work as needed, and define new processes where needed
- Experience with review cycles, style guides, and multi-stakeholder prioritization
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office and content tracking tools (such as Jira/Confluence)
- Experience with structured authoring using DITA/Oxygen (or equivalent)
- A love of terminology and empathy for various industrial energy personas
- Experience documenting industrial energy products, data center hardware projects and/or with utility-scale solar projects strongly preferred
