About the role

We are building the next generation of fleet infrastructure that determines how millions of vehicles come onto and operate on Uber's platform.

Uber's fleet foundations today are mobility-centric and assume a human driver operating a single vehicle. Autonomous fleets have no driver. Delivery fleets carry materially different fulfillment semantics. Fleets increasingly operate across more than one Uber marketplace at the same time. The foundational abstractions that served a single line of business no longer hold, and the work of unifying them has to be done against a live global fleet estate that cannot be interrupted.

This is a highly platform-focused team, addressing challenges that range from modelling physical-world supply into marketplace systems, to building the partner-facing integration surface through which external fleet operators onboard, to evolving foundational domain models beneath systems carrying live production traffic without disrupting the operating business.

What the Candidate Will Do:

  • Lead the architecture, strategy and multi-year technical roadmap for Uber's fleet foundations across mobility, delivery and autonomous use cases
  • Define unified fleet and earner abstractions spanning human-driver, delivery and autonomous fleets, and drive their adoption across Uber's Earner, Identity, Fulfillment, Pricing, Marketplace and Matching platforms
  • Drive cross-team and cross-functional alignment across multiple Line of Business and platform teams, targeting fleet onboarding time, launch velocity and partner integration cost
  • Own architectural coherence between Uber's fleet entity model and the fulfillment semantics of autonomous and delivery use cases as those use cases are incorporated into shared foundations
  • Lead the evolution of Uber's third-party fleet integration surface so that autonomous, delivery and mobility fleet operators onboard through the same foundations, and so that partner integrations move from bespoke engineering to self-serve configuration
  • Own backward compatibility and migration safety for Uber's existing global fleet estate throughout the transition, across jurisdictions with differing licensing, insurance and tax treatment
  • Engage deeply with engineers across the marketplace platform organizations to identify gaps, streamline workflows and define long-term platform solutions
  • Act as a technical partner to EMs, PMs and staff engineers, contributing to org-wide and company-wide fleet and autonomous strategy
  • Provide hands-on technical direction, mentoring and design leadership to senior and staff engineers across fleet and platform teams
  • Influence global fleet platform initiatives and ensure strong collaboration across sites, time zones and partner organizations

About the Team:

Fleet & Vehicle Platform systems sit on the critical path for every vehicle and every fleet-operated earner that wants to transact on the platform. If we don't succeed, a vehicle cannot be onboarded, a fleet operator cannot bring supply online, and an autonomous or delivery fleet cannot be introduced to Uber's marketplace at all. Our work is driven by the physical realities of vehicle fleets — ownership, operators, shifts, bases, licensing, insurance and jurisdiction — modelled into a marketplace that was originally built for individual drivers operating single vehicles. We build and maintain a sophisticated stack that includes:

  1. Fleet and Vehicle Identity and Onboarding: Representing fleets, fleet operators and fleet-affiliated earners as first-class entities, onboarded by a third party rather than by Uber.
  2. Fleet Entity and Lifecycle Modelling: The foundational domain model and state machines describing how a fleet, its vehicles and its earners exist and change over time across the marketplace.
  3. Third-Party Fleet Operator Integration: The external API surface and integration platform through which independent fleet operators, dispatch software vendors and autonomous partners connect their supply to Uber.
  4. Fleet Supply Semantics in Matching and Fulfillment: Multi-vehicle earner association, shift-based availability, base and home-location semantics, fleet-level acceptance behaviour and street-hail eligibility within Uber's matching and fulfillment systems.
  5. Fleet Economics: Fleet-specific fees, surcharges, commission structures and jurisdictional tax treatment expressed within Uber's pricing and billing systems.
  6. Fleet Configuration and Self-Serve Operations: The configuration platform enabling fleet capabilities to be launched, varied by market and operated without bespoke engineering per partner.
  7. Fleet Monitoring, Incident Management and Maintenance: Deployment, monitoring, intelligence, incident handling and maintenance workflows for vehicles and fleets in operation.
  8. Autonomous and Delivery Fleet Foundations: Extending all of the above to fleets with no human driver, and to fleets whose fulfillment semantics differ materially from mobility.

Furthermore, we collaborate with platform teams across Uber — Vehicle, Earner, Identity, Marketplace, Fulfillment, Pricing, Safety, Delivery and Autonomous Mobility — to ensure fleet capabilities serve every Uber line of business through one set of foundations rather than many.

Basic qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field AND 4-years full-time Software Engineering work experience OR 7-years full-time Software Engineering work experience, WHICH INCLUDES 4-years total technical software engineering experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Programming language (e.g. C, C++, Java, Python, or Go)
  • Note the 4-years total of specialized software engineering experience may have been gained through education and full-time work experience, additional training, coursework, research, or similar (OR some combination of these).  The years of specialized experience are not necessarily in addition to the years of Education & full-time work experience indicated.

Technical skills:

Required:

  • Deep hands-on experience building and operating distributed backend systems at scale.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience modelling vehicles, fleets, operators, couriers or other physical-world supply as first-class entities in a large-scale marketplace or logistics platform, together with experience in at least one of:
    • Evolving foundational domain models under live production traffic, or owning platform capabilities across more than one marketplace or line of business.
    • Demonstrated ownership of multi-year, cross-organizational platform programs with heavy dependencies across many partner teams, including driving alignment and influencing technical direction outside of direct reporting lines.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and owning external API surfaces and partner-facing integration platforms through which third-party operators connect that physical-world supply

Preferred:

  • Experience with autonomous vehicle, connected-vehicle or EV ecosystems, adjacent to the domain areas above.
  • Experience with delivery, logistics or last-mile fulfillment platforms, adjacent to the domain areas above.
  • Experience with pricing, fares, commission or billing systems, including jurisdictional variation, adjacent to the domain areas above.
