Description

The best rides feel effortless and rejuvenating. The cabin is prepared for you before you notice: the freshness of the air, the atmosphere, the temperature, and the humidity. The vehicle seems to know when you need warming up, when you are heating up, when you are feeling unwell, and when you are ready to rest. None of it happens because someone pressed a button. It happens because the car quietly senses how its passengers are doing and responds.

Think of automatic climate control, or air recirculation that reacts to what is in the air outside. We are building the next generation of that technology, to go with Tesla's industry-leading FSD vehicles.

Passengers never tell a vehicle how they feel, and no single sensor tells the whole story. Body heat, comfort, and drowsiness show up across many signals, and the vehicle understands them best when a well-chosen set of sensors works together.

As a sensor fusion hardware engineer on the Sensing Hardware Team, you will design that set. You'll decide which sensors the vehicle needs, where they go, and how their signals come together. Then you'll build prototypes, study the data, and refine the suite until it is as simple, robust, and affordable as it can be. You'll work closely with the algorithm team, and you're welcome to shape the algorithms yourself.

As FSD frees people from the wheel, the ride itself becomes the product. You'll own a focused part of it, from first prototype to high-volume production, on one of the most visible products in the world.

Responsibilities

  • Own your subsystem end to end, from requirements through production, and be accountable for how it performs in the field
  • Architect the sensor suite for passenger comfort and state: choose sensing principles, quantity, and placement, and decide where signals are combined
  • Choose sensors with data: instrument prototypes with candidate sensors, analyze what each one adds, and cut to the smallest suite that meets the goal
  • Electrical: design and build sensor prototypes, including schematics, PCB layout, low-noise analog front-ends, and bring-up
  • Mechanical: design sensor housings, mounting, and interior integration in CAD, working with HVAC and design teams
  • Software and algorithms: collect and analyze multi-sensor data, and design and validate fusion algorithms with the algorithm team
  • Run test campaigns with people and in vehicles, and turn the results into clear hardware decisions
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing to take the design from prototype to production

Requirements

  • Degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • A proven record of building a feature or product from the ground up and taking it to commercial production
  • Hands-on sensor hardware experience in any domain, such as thermal, climate, air or gas, optical, MEMS, biometric, wearable, medical, consumer, industrial, appliance, or robotics, and the curiosity to learn a new one
  • Experience combining multiple sensors and showing that the combination beats any one of them
  • Strong PCB and analog design, with working knowledge of CAD and mechanical integration
  • Strong data analysis (Python, MATLAB, or similar), with comfort using statistical or machine-learning methods
  • Familiarity with common cabin and environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, CO2, VOCs) and how people affect them, plus the basics of human thermal comfort
  • Clear communication, sound judgment with incomplete information, and the ability to bring people along with data
