Tesla is pushing the boundaries of what a battery is capable of. We are looking for an engineer that will optimize both cell performance and lifetime. This role owns the cell testing and data analysis to support the battery management system which impacts the performance and reliability of all Tesla electric vehicles and energy products. 

In this role, you will manage the development and implementation of cell characterization tests needed to enable robust control strategies for cells of different chemistries. You will collaborate closely with the firmware and controls teams to set the limits for cell usage. You will identify and develop new cell testing schedules and techniques required to validate performance and lifetime across different cell chemistries and use cases. 

Responsibilities

  • Develop new cell test protocols to enable next-generation cell control strategies in products
  • Analyze test results to provide the cell limits that optimize performance and reliability
  • Own cell-level test specifications and test plans to characterize cell properties needed for cell control algorithms
  • Coordinate cell tests by allocating resources to help manage the release of new cell parameter-sets into products
  • Own the workflow for validation testing required to release new firmware

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Material Science, or equivalent experience 
  • Prior battery related industry experience is a plus 
  • Knowledge of how lithium batteries work  
  • Familiar with implementing battery control algorithms  
  • Experience with battery testing  
  • Prior programming experience in a high-level programming language such as Python or MATLAB

Expected Compensation

$130,400 - $195,600/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
