The Team

Join a newly formed engineering team at eBay focused on building Authentication as a Service, a platform designed to extend eBay's authentication capabilities to other marketplaces and partners.

Today, eBay's Authenticity Guarantee program helps build trust in high-value transactions by authenticating eligible items before they reach buyers. We're expanding these capabilities beyond eBay, starting with Depop, and building a scalable, reusable platform that can support new authentication experiences across multiple marketplaces.

This initiative involves re-architecting existing systems and building new cloud-native services from the ground up. You'll join a small, highly collaborative team where software development, automated testing, and production quality are integral to building the platform successfully.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend development experience and a passion for building high-quality, reliable software through automation.

This is a backend software development role first, with additional ownership of automated testing and engineering quality. You'll design and build production backend services while developing the unit, integration, API, and UI automation needed to validate them.

You'll help establish a developer-owned quality culture, ensuring that testing is built into the development lifecycle rather than treated as a separate activity.

What You Will Accomplish

  • Design, develop, and operate scalable backend services, APIs, and distributed systems using technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, and REST.
  • Build and maintain automated unit tests, integration tests, and API tests to validate backend functionality and service interactions.
  • Develop UI test automation using Cypress to validate critical user workflows and end-to-end functionality.
  • Create reusable testing frameworks, utilities, and automation solutions that improve test coverage and engineering efficiency.
  • Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines to support reliable deployments, regression prevention, and production readiness.
  • Validate complex backend workflows involving databases, APIs, asynchronous messaging, and distributed services.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to establish testing standards, improve application testability, and drive continuous improvements in production quality.

What You Will Bring

  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial hands-on development of production backend applications.
  • Proficiency in Java or comparable backend languages such as Python, C#, or Go, with a willingness to develop in Java.
  • Strong experience designing and building backend services, RESTful APIs, and distributed applications.
  • Hands-on experience writing unit tests and integration tests as part of everyday software development.
  • Experience with API and integration testing frameworks such as REST Assured or comparable tools.
  • Practical experience developing automated UI tests using Cypress.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, debugging skills, and the ability to design, maintain, and troubleshoot both production code and automated tests.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Java, Spring Boot, JUnit, and REST Assured.
  • Experience testing event-driven architectures, asynchronous workflows, and distributed backend systems.
  • Familiarity with GCP or AWS, containerized applications, and CI/CD automation.
  • Experience establishing developer-owned testing practices and improving automated test coverage across engineering teams.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development and testing tools, with the ability to review, explain, and troubleshoot generated code.

Why Join This Team

Build a new platform from the ground up. You'll contribute directly to the backend architecture and functionality of a new authentication platform while helping define how quality and automated testing are built into its foundation.

Make quality an engineering responsibility. This team is embracing a developer-owned approach to testing. You'll have the opportunity to influence testing practices, automation strategies, and engineering standards rather than working in a traditional, separate QA function.

Work on a high-priority initiative. The platform is central to expanding eBay's authentication capabilities into Depop and beyond, with strong organizational support and visibility across engineering and business leadership.

Have meaningful technical ownership. As part of a small, highly collaborative team, you'll work across backend development, automation, and production reliability, with the opportunity to shape engineering decisions from the earliest stages.

Explore AI-assisted engineering. The team is adopting AI-powered development and testing practices to improve productivity and accelerate delivery, while maintaining a strong emphasis on understanding, validating, and troubleshooting the code being produced.
