Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

We’re working on the future. If you are seeking an iterative, fast-paced environment where you can drive innovation, apply state-of-the-art technologies to solve real-world challenges, and provide visible benefit to end-users, this is your opportunity.

We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who combines superb 3D CAD capabilities with a demonstrated ability to get the right work done quickly and effectively. This person must have experience working in a multidisciplinary environment and producing top-notch CAD designs for spacecraft-class hardware. This person must be comfortable working with large databases with complex constraints—managing the full lifecycle of mechanical design data from concept through production release within Siemens NX and Teamcenter.

You will be embedded within a team of engineers driving the mechanical design of satellite systems—translating engineering intent into production-ready CAD models, drawings, and BOMs that flow cleanly through our product lifecycle management infrastructure. Your work directly enables the velocity of satellite development and production.

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities
  • CAD Design Creation & Management: Create, iterate, and manage CAD designs for large spacecraft system databases; maintain model integrity across complex assemblies with hundreds of interdependent components
  • Drawing Production & Release: Manage the creation, checking, issuing, and revision of engineering drawings for parts and assemblies—ensuring compliance with Leo drawing standards and GD&T best practices
  • BOM Lifecycle Management: Manage CAD BOM through the product lifecycle management system (Teamcenter); ensure BOM accuracy from design through release to manufacturing
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work with a team of engineers across multiple disciplines—mechanical, thermal, electrical, structural, manufacturing, metrology, tooling, assembly, and test—in the ideation and creation of system concepts
  • Supplier & Vendor Interface: Engage with suppliers and vendors as needed for CAD definition of sourced components and systems; develop procurement-ready technical data packages
  • Manufacturing Source Review: Work with procurement and sourcing in identification and review of manufacturing sources; ensure designs are optimized for producibility
  • Configuration Control: Support change management workflows, revision control, and design data integrity within the PLM ecosystem
  • Database Organization: Maintain CAD database organization, naming conventions, and file management standards to enable team-wide efficiency at scale

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or 1+ years of electrical or mechanical engineering experience
  • 3+ years of CAD experience in complex mechanical/electro-mechanical assemblies, machines, structures, or systems
  • 1+ years of experience in the creation, manipulation, iteration, and optimization of mechanical designs with complex interactions and constraints
  • 1+ years of experience interfacing with a range of engineering disciplines, and understanding the scope of those inputs and requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expert-level capability with Siemens NX (4+ years of experience in advanced CAD assemblies)
  • Manufacturing and test knowledge (forming, machining, finishing, tooling, assembly, testing)
  • Awareness of adhesives, finishes, material properties, and selection criteria that influence selection for harsh environments (space-grade thermal cycling, radiation, vacuum)
  • Experience optimizing design features for part cost (material handling, manufacturing, finishing, measurement)
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturers, machinists, and part producers
  • Experience developing fabrication drawings for a range of manufacturing methods (rapid prototyping, machining, forming, composite manufacturing)
  • Experienced in CAD database management, CAD Bill of Materials management, and Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) using Teamcenter
  • Experience with change control and management through ERP/MRP systems to manufacturing/assembly personnel
  • Hands-on support in prototyping, assembly, and test
  • Excellent CAD database organization and management skills
  • Organized, with demonstrable ability to set priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced satellite development environment
