Software Engineer, HR Operations & Systems
Description
The Payroll System is the internal platform Tesla's payroll operations teams use to run pay cycles, investigate discrepancies, and satisfy audit and SOX obligations. We build the tooling that a real, named group of people opens every morning — short feedback loops, high correctness bar, and no ambiguity about whether the thing we shipped helped.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship features end to end — schema and migration, API, and UI — rather than throwing work over a wall
- Design RESTful APIs in .NET (C#) following our controller to service to repository layering, with dependency injection throughout
- Build data-dense React interfaces in TypeScript: AG-Grid views, TDS components, Jotai and React Query for state and server data
- Work on audit workflows, findings triage, and security group management — features with compliance consequences, where "mostly right" isn't right
- Write unit and integration tests alongside the code (see test/ — unit and integration suites are part of the definition of done, not a follow-up ticket)
- Participate in code review, both directions
Requirements
- 5+ years building production backend services in .NET/C#, Python, or Go — with a willingness to work primarily in C#
- Working React and TypeScript experience; comfortable owning a feature's UI, not just its API
- Solid SQL: can design a table, read an execution plan, and explain why a query got slow
- Testing habits and comfort with Git-based review workflows
- CS fundamentals — data structures and algorithms you can actually reason about, not recite
- Integrating LLM APIs (Azure OpenAI, Claude, or similar) into production backend services
- RAG pipelines, vector databases, or structured prompt engineering
- Shipping AI-assisted features in an enterprise app
