Software Development Engineer, AWS DMS
- AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) has migrated more than 1.5 million database workloads to AWS, helping enterprises move from commercial databases (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2) to open-source Amazon Aurora and RDS (PostgreSQL, MySQL). The service is used by customers across the world to migrate their most important data from their on-premises datacenters to Amazon services. Our customers depend on our services' reliability and security to handle their business data. More information on AWS DMS is available at http://aws.amazon.com/dms.
- As an SDE2 on the DMS Platform team, you will work on the control plane that provisions, orchestrates, deploys, secures, and monitors a large global fleet of replication instances powering heterogeneous database migrations. Provisioning, scaling, patching, failover, and monitoring across the fleet are handled automatically by the control systems you'll build and own. Your work will directly impact availability, security compliance, deployment safety, and the experience of customers running their most critical production migrations on AWS.
- AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) is a part of AWS Utility Computing (UC) which provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.
- Design, implement, and ship features and fixes across the DMS control plane — provisioning and lifecycle management of replication instances, replication task orchestration, host management, and the APIs that customers and internal systems use to control migrations.
- Own the deployment and release systems that keep a large global fleet reliable and continuously up to date, including deployment pipelines, OS patching, and safe fleet-rollout mechanisms.
- Deliver security and compliance improvements that protect customer data and keep the service secure.
- Drive operational excellence: design alarms, monitors, and automated safeguards, and build the tooling that shortens time to recovery.
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and release management for our deployment cadence.
- Participate in an on-call rotation, triaging production incidents and driving them to resolution.
- Your morning starts with an alarm: a deployment to one region has stalled partway through the fleet. You trace it to a race condition in a deployment workflow, ship a fix, and get the rollout moving again.
- By midday, you're designing automation that provisions, patches, and safely rolls out changes across every region. You're thinking about multi-region safety, failure isolation, and making complex infrastructure invisible to its users.
- After lunch, you dig into a recurring failure that's been quietly generating operational tickets for weeks. You find the root cause — not just the symptom — fix it structurally, and close out an entire class of issues, using and helping improve AI-powered engineering tools that accelerate defect detection, code review, and incident resolution.
- What makes this role different: you own the control systems that keep a large global fleet of database migrations reliable and secure — you build it, you run it, and you make it better every release.
- Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we're building an environment that celebrates knowledge-sharing and mentorship. We care about your career growth and strive to assign projects that help our team members develop their engineering expertise so they feel empowered to take on more complex tasks in the future.
- The DMS Platform team owns the control plane and the deployment, host-management, and operational systems behind it. We take ownership of a complex, high-scale system and make it better every release, so that safe and reliable deployments are the default. We leverage AI extensively: from autonomous bug-fixing to an on-call agent that cuts troubleshooting time dramatically.
