Are you passionate about building premium devices using cutting-edge technologies? The Surface development team is seeking a talented firmware development engineer to lead and drive software and firmware engineering efforts for next-generation products.

The candidate will have solid software and firmware development experience, demonstrated technical leadership, and experience delivering consumer products from early architecture and prototyping through manufacturing and release. This Senior Software Engineer role requires a solid technical focus on system software design, firmware development, hardware and software integration, and complex system-level debugging.

You will collaborate with software, firmware, hardware, validation, manufacturing, and program management teams, as well as silicon vendors, component suppliers, and other external partners, to deliver secure, reliable, and high-quality Surface experiences.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the architecture, design, development, and integration of system software, embedded firmware, device drivers, and engineering tools for next-generation Surface products, operating with minimal technical oversight.
  • Translate product requirements into robust technical designs and implementation plans, while identifying dependencies, technical risks, security requirements, and cross-system impacts.
  • Produce extensible, maintainable, secure, and performant code; conduct code reviews and drive improvements in coding standards, test coverage, automation, and engineering practices.
  • Lead system-level debugging and root-cause analysis across hardware, firmware, drivers, and operating systems, using logs, traces, telemetry, debuggers, and other diagnostic tools to deliver durable fixes.
  • Drive hardware bring-up, software and firmware integration, validation, manufacturing readiness, and release execution throughout the consumer-product lifecycle.
  • Work effectively with software and firmware engineers at various levels, technical leads, and management, providing technical guidance and communicating design decisions, risks, progress, and engineering tradeoffs.
  • Collaborate across hardware, validation, manufacturing, quality, and program management disciplines, as well as with silicon vendors, component suppliers, and other external partners, to resolve dependencies and deliver secure, reliable, and high-quality products.
Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to quickly understand complex, unfamiliar code, with experience in technologies such as SPI, USB, I2C, I3C, UART, kernel or Windows internals, Windows or Linux drivers, UEFI, WDF, KMDF, or UMDF.

Additional or preferred qualifications

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience on firmware development or qualifying Keyboard, Mouse,Touch, Pen, or Touchpad firmware across operating systems or platforms.
  • Experience with new hardware bring-up and factory manufacturing, including product or subsystem development through multiple consumer-product releases.
  • Experience with C/C++ design and coding skills; hands-on experience with Rust is highly desirable.
  • Experience developing system or device drivers and debugging complex issues spanning multiple subsystems, owners, and organizations.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and independently drive work forward.
  • Solid cross-functional communication skills across Program Management, Test, Hardware, and partner teams, with flexibility for domestic and international travel.
