Senior Software Engineer - Mobile Development
Overview We are seeking a full-time Senior Software Engineer - Mobile Development at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area OR in our Cary, NC office on our Garmin Labs team. In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership and developing complex software for Garmin products and/or applications as an individual contributor. You will design and develop mobile software solutions while mentoring less experienced engineers and helping guide technical direction. Essential Functions May serve as a Lead Software Engineer for complex software development projects and/or reviews architected modules and software systems supporting new technology or improving capability and performance of existing functionality. Decomposes functional requirements into well-defined tasks. Offers peer technical assessments in areas of expertise, new technologies, and software designs. Participates in project leadership and program planning, including providing technical input to product development plans and concept documents. Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal and objective feasibility and applies sound judgment in setting schedules and assessing technical risks. Mentors and provides guidance to less experienced Software Engineers (Software Engineer 1 and Software Engineer 2). Contributes to advanced technical research on new technologies. Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as appropriate. Collaborates and adds value through participation in peer code reviews, architecture reviews, and technical discussions. Provides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem-solving techniques. Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math, Physics or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) Demonstrated proficiency and experience necessary to develop complex software in Kotlin, Java, Swift, or other selected languages. Experience developing Android and/or iOS mobile applications using native platform SDKs. Demonstrated proficiency with designing well-architected software systems and modules that support new technology or improve capability and performance of existing functionality. Demonstrated ability to serve as a lead software engineer for complex software projects. Demonstrated capability to offer peer technical assessments in areas of expertise, new technologies, and software designs. Ability to decompose functional requirements into well-defined tasks while balancing quality, quantity, and complexity in work output. Demonstrated understanding of object-oriented design principles, software architecture, data structures, and algorithms. Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Desired Qualifications Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5) Experience developing consumer-facing Android and/or iOS mobile applications. Experience with modern mobile development frameworks and technologies, including Jetpack Compose, SwiftUI, UIKit, and Android SDK. Experience working with wireless communication technologies such as Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Experience consuming REST-based APIs and cloud-connected services. Experience developing applications that utilize 3D visualization, simulation, or real-time rendering technologies such as Unity, Unreal Engine, WebGL, Three.js, or similar frameworks. Experience mentoring software engineers and providing technical leadership. Experience evaluating and introducing new technologies, tools, or development practices.
