The Microsoft Communications team is transforming how communicators use artificial intelligence to understand audiences, create content, measure impact, and make decisions. The Communications AI Lab helps teams test new ideas, learn quickly, and turn the most useful experiments into practical capabilities that can be reused across the organization.  

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Microsoft Communications team, you will build and scale AI-powered tools to enable communicators to experiment rapidly, learn from data, and turn proven concepts into everyday capabilities. You will collaborate closely with communicators, data and insights professionals, and engineering partners to transform well-scoped business problems into working solutions. You will own features and projects from prototype through adoption, while working with technical partners across the organization when the work requires broader architecture or organizational alignment.

Responsibilities

  • Build agents, workflow automations, data integrations, and applications that address defined communications needs, including research, media intelligence, narrative analysis, content workflows, measurement, and knowledge discovery. 

  • Partner with users to clarify requirements, create prototypes, gather feedback, and improve solutions based on observed usage and measurable outcomes. 

  • Write, test, debug, and document maintainable code. 

  • Integrate approved internal and external data sources using secure APIs and authentication methods. 

  • Develop evaluation frameworks for accuracy, reliability, grounding, safety, and usefulness. 

  • Implement appropriate validation, error handling, access controls, monitoring, and human review processes. 

  • Create clear technical documentation, reusable components, and shared building blocks that enable faster and more consistent future development. 

  • Partner with communications, product, engineering, security, privacy, legal, and Responsible AI stakeholders to resolve issues and ensure compliance with Microsoft standards. 

  • Collaborate with external suppliers and partners to design and develop third-party solutions that meet Microsoft business and technical requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications  

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python  

  • OR equivalent experience. 

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience building and shipping software, automation, data products, or AI-enabled applications beyond the prototype stage.  

  • Experience with Large Language Models, agents, retrieval, tool calling, structured outputs, or related AI application patterns.  

  • Experience working with application programming interfaces, authentication, enterprise data sources, testing, debugging, and source control.  

  • Experience building internal enterprise tools or workflow products in collaboration with nontechnical users.  

  • Experience evaluating AI systems for quality, grounding, safety, reliability, and user value.  

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio, Power Platform, or comparable technologies.  

  • Experience working with communications teams to plan, develop, approve, distribute, and assess their work.  

  • Experience applying machine learning or data techniques to large volumes of text, audience information, or other unstructured business data. 


Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
