Senior Service Engineer – Siemens Automation, PLC/SCADA & Water Solutions

1. Role Purpose

The Senior Service Engineer provides hands-on technical service and lifecycle support for Siemens industrial automation systems at customer sites across the UAE and, when required, the wider GCC, Middle East and EMEA region.

The role focuses on maintenance, troubleshooting, breakdown support, commissioning, modification, upgrades and migration of Siemens PLC, HMI and SCADA systems, particularly in water and wastewater applications & Industry.

The successful candidate must be capable of independently diagnosing complex automation faults in live operating plants, identifying root causes, implementing corrective actions and clearly communicating technical findings.

This is primarily a hands-on Siemens PLC/HMI/SCADA service engineering role. It is not primarily a project management, design engineering, PCS 7, or OT cybersecurity position.

2. Key Responsibilities

The Senior Service Engineer will:

Perform preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting and breakdown support for Siemens PLC, HMI and SCADA systems.
Diagnose PLC hardware/software, I/O, HMI/SCADA, industrial communication, instrumentation and electrical/control interface faults.
Support SIMATIC S7-300, S7-400/400H/400FH, S7-1200, S7-1500 R/H, S7 Safety Systems, STEP 7, TIA Portal, WinCC and Siemens HMI/Comfort Panels.
Analyze, troubleshoot and modify existing, legacy and unfamiliar PLC/HMI applications.
Perform approved software modifications, commissioning, recommissioning, functional testing and system recovery.
Prepare, verify and restore PLC/HMI/SCADA software backups and perform hardware replacement and recommissioning.
Support lifecycle upgrades and migrations of installed Siemens automation systems.
Troubleshoot PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Industrial Ethernet, Modbus and related industrial communication interfaces.
Diagnose interactions between PLC/SCADA systems, field instrumentation, control loops, motors, valves and other control interfaces.
Investigate recurring failures, identify root causes and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
Prepare clear technical service reports covering findings, actions, recommendations and outstanding risks.
Communicate and coordinate effectively with customers, internal engineering teams, OEMs and other stakeholders.
Work independently during plant breakdowns, shutdowns, outages and other time-critical interventions.
Follow applicable HSE, cybersecurity, change-control and customer site procedures.
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers when required.

3. Job Travel Needs & Site Requirements

The successful candidate must be:

Willing to work regularly at customer sites and travel extensively within the UAE.
Willing to undertake onshore, remote and offshore assignments where required.
Willing to travel within the GCC, Middle East and EMEA based on future business requirements.
Available for planned shutdowns, commissioning and time-critical service interventions when required.
Comfortable working in operational industrial facilities under applicable HSE requirements.
Holder of a valid UAE driving licence.

4. Essential Technical Competencies & Skills

Candidates must demonstrate practical, hands-on capability, not only theoretical knowledge or general familiarity.

Siemens PLC, HMI & SCADA

Strong hands-on experience with:

SIMATIC S7-300, S7-400/400H/400FH, S7-1200 and S7-1500
STEP 7 and TIA Portal
Siemens WinCC and HMI/Comfort Panels
PLC hardware/software diagnostics and online troubleshooting
Program analysis and approved modifications
HMI/SCADA alarm, tag and communication troubleshooting
Hardware replacement and recommissioning
Backup, restoration and system recovery
Commissioning and recommissioning

Experience with SIMATIC S7 Safety Systems is highly desirable.

Industrial Communications

Practical troubleshooting knowledge of:

PROFINET and Industrial Ethernet
PROFIBUS DP/PA
Modbus TCP/RTU
OPC/OPC UA, where applicable
Diagnosis of communication failures and configuration/replacement of relevant industrial network components

Troubleshooting Capability

Strong, methodical troubleshooting capability across:

PLC hardware and software
Local and remote I/O
HMI and SCADA
Industrial communications
Field devices and instrumentation
Electrical and control interfaces
Windows-based automation systems
Existing, legacy and unfamiliar installations

Water & Wastewater Experience

Practical experience in one or more of the following is strongly preferred:

Water and wastewater treatment plants
Pumping stations
Water transmission and distribution facilities
Desalination facilities
Utility and industrial water systems

Candidates should preferably understand automation associated with pumps and motor control, valves and actuators, process instrumentation, interlocks and permissives, sequential control, remote stations and PLC/SCADA monitoring and control.

Basic Process Instrumentation

Practical knowledge and troubleshooting experience with common flow, pressure, level and temperature instrumentation, including electromagnetic flowmeters, preferably Siemens SITRANS MAG or equivalent. Experience should include configuration, commissioning, diagnostics, measurement troubleshooting, verification/calibration, signal and I/O troubleshooting, and PLC/SCADA integration.

Service & Customer-Facing Competencies

Able to work independently and safely at operational customer sites, apply systematic and logical troubleshooting, remain calm during breakdowns, communicate faults, root causes, risks and corrective actions clearly, protect customer operations when implementing automation changes, recognize when specialist escalation is required, produce concise technical reports, and work professionally within customer and multicultural teams.

Regional Customer Experience

Experience supporting major utilities, municipal authorities, EPC contractors or similarly demanding end users in the GCC/Middle East is highly valued. Experience in environments comparable to TAQA, DEWA, EWEC, EtihadWE, SEWA, SWA/SWCC, KAHRAMAA or other regional utilities is relevant. Previous employment with these specific organizations is not required.

5. Additional / Desirable Experience

The following are advantages but not mandatory:

Siemens PCS 7 / DCS and PCS 7 Safety Systems
ESD and F&G systems
Advanced industrial network architecture
OT/industrial cybersecurity
ISA/IEC 62443 or NIST SP 800-82 familiarity
Industrial IoT or cloud-connected automation
Petrochemical or oil & gas experience
Relevant Siemens technical certifications
Relevant industrial control system cybersecurity certifications

PCS 7 and OT cybersecurity expertise are advantageous but not mandatory. Strong hands-on Siemens S7, STEP 7, TIA Portal and WinCC capability is significantly more important for this position.

6. Education & Experience

Education: Bachelor's degree in one of the following disciplines, or a closely related engineering discipline (Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automation / Control Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering).

Professional Experience: Preferably 5+ years of relevant industrial automation and/or service engineering experience, with significant hands-on Siemens PLC/HMI/SCADA exposure.
