Rail Infrastructure offers a wide range of systems for signalling, control, communications and electrification for main line, regional, metro and light rail infrastructure applications.

The Mobile Communications business in Poole supplies on-board communications equipment and associated technical solutions to rail industry operators and suppliers worldwide. This includes the GSM-R Cab Radio with GPS and LTE connectivity and the GSM-R Data Radio. We have earned a respected reputation in the industry which has developed as a result of our success in delivering to our customers across the globe. In addition, we are leading the way within the railway industry in developing the next generation of rail communications (Future Railway Mobile Communication System), based on 5G technology, so this is a great time to join the business in the development of a new, exciting technology.

This is a dynamic, varied role where you will take technical responsibility for the engineering lifecycle of our mission-critical GSM-R and FRMCS on-board communication systems within the highly regulated rail industry. In this pivotal role, as well as maintaining technical integrity and lifecycle viability of our products and ancillary equipment, you will also support sales and projects with expect guidance on product details, involved from the early stages of bids and tenders, through design, validation, testing and approvals, to on-going customer support.

With the application of your technical knowledge, and an understanding of our products and processes gained through experience, you will act as a subject matter expert (SME) for internal and external stakeholders and be highly active in ensuring the product success, from requirements specifications, managing end-to-end change process for our existing products and supporting product certification for external approval of our products. In addition, you will support the Sales team with developing new solutions to customer requirements and the Product Supply team, validating the equipment being supplied.

Crucially, your impact goes beyond product lifecycle engineering as this role offers the unique blend with product approvals and certification, supporting the engineer leading this aspect of the business. You will be active in ensuring our voice and data communication products comply with the EU and UK standards for Interoperability (CCS TSI/NTSN), alongside other critical standards such as fire safety.

You'll be responsible for...

• Responsible for engineering lifecycle on existing core products developed by the business, and it’s ancillary equipment. This includes managing the end-to-end change process on our products which involves update to BOMs, modification records, design/assembly drawings and all product customer documentation. In addition, proactive obsolescence management. This will require collaboration with Product Management, the Engineering teams and Production.
• Specification, design and maintenance of installation kits offered with our cab radio and data radio products.
• Assist the Sales team with leading the development of new solutions to customer tenders, completion of technical responses and the compilation of detailed statements of compliance for customers against their requirements.
• Support Product Road Maps identifying key features of products in the future, with input from across the business. Includes creating product specifications.
• Supports projects including design drawings and CAD assemblies to meet specific project requirements and product related queries.
• Support to approvals and certification of Mobile Comms’ products to EU and UK interoperability specifications. Includes management of external approvals, frequent communication with the Notified Body/Approvals Body, preparation of compliance documentation and assisting with compliance queries.
• Active participation in British and European industry working groups to steer the transition toward FRMCS, supporting Siemens’ position and providing advice and guidance across the business on emerging requirements.

• Previous experience and knowledge of product engineering lifecycle management
• Experience and/or the ability to learn use of 2D and 3D CAD (Auto CAD/Inventor/Solidworks
• IT skills; You will require a proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office elements including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
• Excellent problem solving, verbal and written communication skills with an ability to write clear, concise and comprehensive technical documentation
• Experience in communications technology (GSM, 3G/4G/5G, MCX), IoT, hardware or software engineering would be useful, but not essential

To succeed in the role, you will need to be adaptable, able to leverage your deep technical expertise and gain a highly detailed understanding of our products and a workable understanding of software engineering, electrical and electronic engineering and communications.

This role demands communication and interpersonal skills, as you will confidently and proactively collaborate with teams across the business to understand and deliver solutions to the customer, including Software and Hardware Development teams, Sales, Accounting and Production, as well as external stakeholders across the globe.

The role is primarily based in the Poole office (with some home working possible); however, national and international travel to participate in external meetings, testing or other industry leading activities will be required.
