Summary

Interaction Architecture (IA) is a design and prototyping team within the larger Apple Design Team. We are a diverse team of designers, hardware engineers, software engineers, and makers who explore future experiences for Apple’s existing and speculative products. We apply technical expertise and product thinking to early-stage concepts, most often doing work that incorporates multiple modalities in both hardware and software.

Description

This position requires a self-motivated engineer with strong technical and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate works effectively both independently and collaboratively, and can effectively engage on ambiguous briefs as well as on specific, directed work. You will help us “learn by doing”, working rapidly and cross-functionally to understand and express key capabilities of future products and technologies by creating interactive software prototypes to guide decision-making and build intuition across the company. You should be excited by the prospect of rapidly prototyping innovative concepts while simultaneously establishing robust, forward-looking software architecture. You will collaborate with peers in a design-led environment where critique is constructive and frequent, briefs are intentionally open-ended, and the end goal is the human experience rather than technical perfection. Your work will be instrumental in helping Apple to understand the promises and pitfalls of technologies that may not even exist yet, and will help guide the incubation of those technologies towards product.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience for Apple platforms, with expertise in Swift, Objective-C, and Apple's core frameworks
  • Hands-on experience integrating ML models or LLM APIs into applications
  • Thinks at the platform level, crafting APIs and services; experience and expertise from UI down to daemons and system frameworks
  • Strong product judgment, with a track record of influencing design or technical direction in service of the user experience
  • Energized by learning; has repeatedly adopted new tools or techniques to solve novel problems
  • Skilled in translating ambiguous design concepts into functional software within compressed timelines, with demonstrated ability to iterate based on design critique
  • History of successful cross-functional work with designers, domain experts, and non-technical collaborators

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years in an R&D, incubation, design studio, or prototyping environment
  • Expertise in presenting technical work to executive audiences, with examples of simplifying complex systems into clear narratives
  • Examples of previous work, Github or blog
