The Mobile Communications business in Poole supplies on-board communications equipment and associated technical solutions to rail industry operators and suppliers worldwide. This includes the GSM-R Cab Radio with GPS and LTE connectivity and the GSM-R Data Radio. As a Senior Certification Engineer, you will be the technical authority ensuring our mission-critical GSM-R and FRMCS onboard cab radio systems meet the highest standards of safety and interoperability. In this pivotal role critical to the success of the business, you will navigate the complex regulatory landscapes of the UK and EU, ensuring our voice and data communication products comply with the EU and UK standards for Interoperability (CCS TSI/NTSN), alongside other critical standards such as fire safety.

Acting as the primary interface with external certification bodies (NoBo/ApBo), you will proactively manage the entire certification lifecycle, from initial quotations to securing final compliance certification for multiple new or upgraded products each year. This includes leading the development and maintenance of comprehensive compliance documentation, responding to internal and customer queries and supporting the Sales team with expert advice.

As the business’s "gatekeeper" for industry standards, you will proactively monitor emerging regulations to ensure our products remain compliant and competitive, providing expert guidance to development teams and supporting the broader product roadmap.

Crucially, your impact goes beyond certification as this role offers a unique blend of high-level certification management and hands-on product engineering. Highly active in supporting Product Engineering such as contributing to product roadmaps, creating and maintaining required product user documentation, specifying ancillary components and configuration management.

You'll be responsible for...

• Certification Leadership: Act as the primary technical lead for product approvals, managing the end-to-end certification process with Notified Bodies (NoBo) and Approval Bodies (ApBo). This includes preparing detailed compliance documentation and managing bi-yearly production audits to maintain our certification status. You will work closely with engineering teams and the on-site test laboratory to assess product and software compliance against functional requirements.
• Standards Advocacy: Keep the business ahead of the curve by monitoring changes to industry standards. You will participate in British and European working groups to help develop emerging FRMCS standards, protecting Siemens' position and advising internal teams on the impact of regulatory shifts, and assist in problem solving to develop a compliant solution. Also update appropriate records to reflect changes to allow us to continue to sell equipment legally.
• Bid & Sales Support: Provide technical expertise to the Sales and Bid teams, creatively developing compliant solutions for customer tenders and compiling detailed statements of compliance against specific requirements, including RAM/LCC (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Life Cycle Costs).
• Cross-Functional Guidance: Provide proficient guidance to Hardware and Software Development, Project, and Accounting teams to ensure a unified approach to compliance. This includes identifying necessary development or testing work required to maintain legal "right to sell" in global markets.
• Product Engineering: Actively contribute to the technical evolution of our GSM-R and FRMCS portfolios. This includes managing configuration records, specifying ancillary components for complex installations, and authoring the technical user documentation that enables our customers to operate our systems safely and effectively. Also support Product Road Maps identifying key future features of products.

• Previous experience and knowledge of product approvals/certifications and the product engineering lifecycle
• IT skills; You will require a proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office elements including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Visio
• Excellent problem solving, verbal and written communication skills with an ability to write clear, concise and comprehensive technical documentation
• Experience in communications (GSM, 3G/4G/5G), IoT, hardware or software engineering would be useful, but not essential

To succeed in the role, you will need to be adaptable, able to leverage your deep technical expertise and gain a highly detailed understanding of our products and a workable understanding of software engineering, electrical and electronic engineering and communications.

This role demands communication and interpersonal skills, as you will confidently and proactively  collaborate with teams across the business to understand and deliver solutions to the customer, including Software and Hardware Development teams, Sales, Accounting and Production, as well as external stakeholders across the globe.

The role is primarily based in the Poole office (with some home working possible); however, national and international travel to participate in external meetings, testing or other industry leading activities will be required.
