Description

The Quality Engineer will work as a member of Tesla’s Quality organization. The primary objective of this role is to support the production of high-quality electric vehicles through the continual improvement of process and product quality and the systems that surround them. The successful candidate for this position must be a problem-solver at his/her core, have a strong quality & customer-focused mindset, and have the personal drive and stamina for relentless, continual improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional teams to hunt down product and process issues, then drive root cause, containment, and corrective/preventive actions until the problem stays closed
  • Perform technical root-cause analysis on vehicle systems (chassis, torque joints, brakes, and related assemblies) using traces, tool data, and station process—not opinion
  • Establish, own, and continually raise quality performance metrics so gaps are visible and acted on, not explained away
  • Coordinate chassis system specifications and deviations as they change, keeping production, design, and suppliers aligned to the current standard
  • Support product specifications, tolerances, design/process FMEAs, and DVAs so critical features are defined tightly enough to be controlled
  • Build and maintain control plans and inspection standards that catch critical-to-quality features in the assembly process, then tighten them as failures teach us more
  • Drive containment and corrective action into the manufacturing line, design, and supplier—fast, complete, and verified
  • Lead review and disposition of discrepant material so nonconforming product is controlled and the underlying process is improved, not just sorted
  • Use QA methods (root cause, CAPA, FMEA, capability, SPC) to manage issue resolution from investigation through sustained monitoring
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement that makes the team more efficient, safer, and better at finding the next weak joint before the field does

Requirements

  • Hands-on background in Failure Analysis, Manufacturing, Quality, or Service, preferably in automotive or consumer electronics
  • Ability to read and explain torque traces: rundown, seating, final torque, and final angle—and to distinguish a good joint from a no-good joint
  • Working knowledge of fasteners (size, grade, thread, head style) and the torque specification that belongs to them
  • Ability to use traces, tool results, and station process to explain a production torque failure or field concern, and to name the control that should have caught it
  • Demonstrated success with quality problem-solving methods: fishbone, FMEA, process capability, hypothesis testing, DoE, SPC
  • Broad technical range plus strong communication skills to work issues across engineering, manufacturing, service, and suppliers
  • Exceptional failure analysis, attention to detail, and analytical thinking under tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Ability to use tools and business systems to manage, synthesize, and interpret data; SQL, Python, Minitab, JMP (or similar) are a strong plus
  • Strong quality mindset: detail-oriented, able to handle multiple priorities, and unwilling to accept a “good enough” joint or process
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (5–10%)
