Project Logistics Engineer
Description
Tesla is focused on building a world of abundance and we are seeking a Project Logistics Engineer to plan and control the movement of cargo for large-scale capital projects. You will sit on the logistics procurement team, in support of the logistics supply chain managers, and enable the services those managers have purchased for programs such as the Terafab build-out and other capital expenditure projects that require high-volume or out-of-gauge movements. You will define how critical shipments should move and confirm that scheduling and execution remain aligned to the approved plan. For major projects, you will act as the project manager: coordinate the teams involved, conduct plan reviews, manage escalations, and resolve issues so activities proceed as planned. This is a high-ownership role for someone who can manage complex movements and present schedule risk to a broad group of stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Project Logistics Engineering & Move Feasibility: Develop transport plans for large-scale and capital programs (including Terafab build-out and other capex programs involving high-volume and out-of-gauge cargo) by defining movement method, equipment, handling constraints, and site-delivery conditions; assess dimensions, weight, lifting points, route constraints, and site access for out-of-gauge and heavy cargo; confirm feasibility with logistics suppliers and project teams; and identify movements that cannot proceed on a standard plan, recommending required equipment, permits, or schedule changes
- Project Management – Major Programs: Act as project manager for major logistics projects assigned by logistics supply chain managers by establishing scope, milestones, owners, and a single integrated plan that project, procurement, and supplier teams can execute against, and confirming that activities proceed as planned
- Service Enablement & Procurement Interface: Enable logistics services purchased by supply chain managers by confirming that awarded scope, statements of work, and service levels are understood by the teams responsible for delivery and that mobilization is aligned to the project plan; partner with Global Supply Managers and logistics supply chain managers so project requirements are reflected in SOWs, service levels, and awarded capacity; and provide execution feedback the supply managers can use in supplier management (note: this role does not own category strategy or commercial negotiation)
- Plan Reviews & Escalation Management: Conduct regular plan reviews with project teams, logistics suppliers, and responsible supply chain managers to compare progress to the approved plan, identify variance early, and record decisions and actions; own logistics escalations on assigned projects and drive issues to resolution across project, site, supplier, and procurement teams; and engage the responsible supply chain manager when a commercial decision or supplier action beyond awarded scope is required
- Issue Resolution & Cross-Functional Coordination: When a movement or service is at risk, coordinate the parties required to restore the plan by addressing constraints related to permits, equipment, site readiness, or supplier performance and closing issues with an agreed action, owner, and date to protect installation windows; coordinate project, construction, site, procurement, and supplier teams to ensure requirements, timing, and decisions are consistent, including confirming origin readiness at equipment suppliers and integration sites and delivery readiness at the project site
- Documentation & Team Contribution: Maintain transport plans, feasibility findings, plan-review records, milestone logs, and escalation reports; coach project partners and analysts on the information required to enable a purchased service and on how to interpret a project plan; and serve as the day-to-day coordination point when a project is off plan
Requirements
- Education & Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field, or equivalent experience with 5–8 years in project logistics, heavy-lift transportation, or capital-project logistics — including planning of out-of-gauge or heavy movements and coordination of the teams required to deliver them — and experience managing project plans, reviews, and escalations in support of a procurement or supply chain team
- Leadership & Influence: Ability to influence project stakeholders, logistics suppliers, and supply chain managers without direct authority, and to present schedule risk and recovery options to Director-level stakeholders
- Technical Skills: Working knowledge of out-of-gauge and heavy-cargo planning including dimensions, weight, route constraints, equipment selection, and site access; ability to build and maintain a project plan for purchased logistics services and confirm that execution remains aligned to that plan; familiarity with permits, escorts, lifting and securement considerations, and special-handling instructions for project cargo; ability to run plan reviews, manage escalations, and track actions across multiple concurrent projects; advanced Excel with experience in a project-control tool or equivalent planning system a plus
- Soft Skills & Process Knowledge: Precise written communication, follow-through, and the judgment to escalate before a missed window becomes an installation delay; solid command of project planning, plan reviews, escalation management, statements of work, and service levels
- Other Requirements: Fluent in English; willingness to travel ~30–40% to project sites, cargo origins, and supplier locations; based in Fremont, CA; passion for Tesla's mission
