Principal Software Engineer
We are part of the Windows Servicing and Delivery (WSD) organization in the Experiences + Devices (E+D) division. Our mission is to keep customers protected and productive by delivering a seamless and timely servicing experience across supported and future versions of Windows.
The Customer Focused Engineering (CFE) team within WSD is seeking highly motivated Principal Software Engineer to support this mission. In this role, you will work on Networking components, focusing on maintaining, securing, and improving existing platform capabilities.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Securing and hardening the Windows OS networking stack against emerging threats.
- Advancing next-generation networking technologies — DNS over HTTPS (DoH), DNS over TLS (DoT), and secure transport protocols.
- Building and securing the networking foundation for Windows Containers and AKS (Azure Kubernetes Service) — the core platform that powers modern enterprise workloads.
- Designing resilient networking systems that operate securely at planetary scale.
- This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy deep system-level debugging, protocol correctness, and delivering impact at scale by keeping the Windows ecosystem secure and reliable for millions of users.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
- OR equivalent experience.
- 12+ years of professional software development experience.
- Proficiency in C or C++, with experience working in large and complex codebases.
- Solid debugging and problem-solving skills, especially in multi-threaded, system-level applications.
- Networking engineers who’ve actually built production networking software — not just configured it.
- Deep expertise in C/C++ and systems programming at the OS or kernel level.
- Hands-on experience debugging and fixing complex, hard-to-repro networking or system issues.
- Solid understanding of networking protocols, routing, switching architectures, and enterprise networking stacks.
- Security mindset — you think like an attacker to build defenses that hold.
- B.Tech in Computer Science or equivalent preferred.
