As part of our continued growth, we are looking for an experienced Power Systems & Software Engineer to join our dynamic Power Systems Consulting team and actively contribute to the development of operational planning tools, combining software development with power systems applications, that support the secure and reliable operation of electricity transmission systems. This role is ideally suited to someone with strong software development capabilities and hands-on experience in power systems modelling and analysis, with particular strength in PSS®E and DIgSILENT PowerFactory, and experience using MATLAB/Simulink for model development and validation.

Location: We are led by our forward-thinking hybrid working policy, which requires 2-3 days a week in the office (Spain or Portugal) or visiting customer sites across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

What will you deliver:

• Implement, test and maintain software solutions, prototypes and automation tools used for power flow analysis, security calculations, automation and operational decision support.
• Support integration between analytical tools, databases, and external vendor platforms.
• Participate in testing, validation and continuous improvement of software applications and analytical models.
• Develop and maintain customer relationships and position PTI Consulting to secure continued and future business.
• Provide technical and project leadership to support successful delivery of consulting engagements, offering credible insights and practical solutions to sophisticated software and data challenges.
• Work with customers to assess their business requirements and application objectives, and propose tailored solutions that address their specific challenges, especially the use of standard power systems analysis software and bespoke customisations.
• Expertly use power systems software (e.g. PSS®E and DIgSILENT PowerFactory) to deliver high-quality modelling and analysis aligned with customer objectives.
• Develop innovative and robust software solutions, primarily using Python, including automation scripts for power systems studies, post-processing of results and complex decision support tools for operational planning.
• Develop and validate mathematical and simulation models for power system equipment and network performance, including the use of MATLAB/Simulink for model development, testing and validation.
• Support the team in developing automation and script processes using power system analysis tools, including PSS®E, to streamline repetitive tasks, reduce errors and enhance analysis efficiency.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of team processes and standards, while actively sharing knowledge and learning from colleagues.
• Manage and support project execution by supervising progress and agreeing timely adjustments to maintain scope, schedule, budget and quality.

What does it take to be successful in this role?

• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or another quantitative discipline.
• Strong programming skills and Python software development experience, including use of tools such as PyCharm, Visual Studio Code and environments such as Git.
• Excellent software engineering fundamentals, including software development principles, system design and writing high-quality, maintainable code.
• Proven experience in power systems modelling and analysis, with strong proficiency in simulation programs, especially PSS®E and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
• Experience using MATLAB/Simulink for model development and validation.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
• Ability to operate effectively in technically complex environments involving engineering analysis, software development and problem solving.
• Ability to communicate effectively with both technical teams and customer stakeholders.
• Strong subject matter leadership skills, with a proven track record to lead cross-functional teams in solving sophisticated problems and developing a high-performing, collaborative team culture.

Good to have, however not crucial:

• Master’s (or PhD) degree is highly appreciated but not mandatory.
• Several years of experience in an Electrical Engineering role within the power systems or software development domain.
• Awareness of CIM/CGMES standards.
• Experience integrating offline simulation tools with real-time power system operation platforms.
• Familiarity with grid connection procedures and codes, along with experience working with transmission, distribution and independent system operators/owners, utilities and energy developers.
