Optical System Engineer Co-Op

EDUCATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Currently a candidate for a PhD degree in Computer Science or a related field with an accredited school.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience testing electro-optic and photonic devices in laboratory environments.
- Knowledge of optical waveguides, modulators, detectors, and related device physics.
- Knowledge of electrical circuitry and its interaction with photonic components.
- Experience working with free-space optical systems and alignment techniques.
- Familiarity with passive optical devices, including filters, resonators, and interferometer networks.
- Proficiency with simulation tools for waveguide modeling and optical circuit design.
Responsibilities
- Perform optical simulations and modal analyses, including wave propagation, resonator design, AWGs, and laser cavity modeling.
- Conduct RF circuit simulations and characterize high-speed components using S-parameters and driver modeling.
- Develop lab automation tools using Python, AI frameworks, FPGAs, Red Pitayas, Arduinos, and automated wafer-probing systems.
- Carry out hands-on experimentation in optical labs, including optical alignment, device characterization, and testing of high-speed communication hardware.
- Analyze, summarize, and present results; prepare technical papers for conferences and journals; and collaborate with experts across photonics, optical networks, and electronics.
Salary Range: $22.85-$65.85 USD/hourly
