Numerical Software Engineer Intern: Strategic Student Program
About Siemens Digital Industries Software
Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation, and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.
Position Overview
We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Numerical Software Engineer Intern to join our geometric modelling team for a year-long industrial placement from July 2027 to August 2028. You will contribute to the development, testing and maintenance of a 3D boundary representation (B-rep) geometric solid modelling kernel used in advanced engineering and CAD applications. This is an excellent opportunity to apply mathematical and numerical knowledge to challenging real-world software problems while gaining experience in a professional development environment.
What You Will Be Doing
- Design, implement and maintain robust numerical algorithms for 3D solid modelling.
- Develop and enhance functionality within a boundary representation geometric modelling kernel.
- Investigate and resolve issues involving geometric accuracy, robustness, performance and edge cases.
- Write clear, efficient and maintainable production code, supported by appropriate unit and regression tests.
- Use debugging, profiling and code-review tools as part of a collaborative software development workflow.
- Work with experienced software engineers, mathematicians and application specialists to understand requirements and deliver reliable solutions.
- Contribute to work that uses AI to develop intelligent engineering tools and apply intelligent analysis to test logs, helping to identify patterns, diagnose issues and improve software quality.
- Document technical approaches, design decisions and test results clearly.
What You Should Bring
- Enrolled on a course that includes a year-long industrial placement.
- Sound knowledge of vector algebra and the ability to apply it to three-dimensional problems.
- Programming experience in C, C++ or another high-level programming language.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with careful attention to numerical accuracy and detail.
- Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly and work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
- Curiosity, initiative and a willingness to learn unfamiliar mathematical and software concepts.
Nice to Have
- Three-dimensional geometry, geometric modelling or computational geometry.
- Numerical methods, numerical analysis or floating-point computation.
- Curves and surfaces, including non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS).
- Practical experience with artificial intelligence (AI), such as machine learning, generative AI, AI-assisted software development, or evaluating and integrating AI-generated solutions.
- Software development practices such as source control, automated testing and peer code review.
What You Will Gain
- Hands-on experience developing production-quality numerical software for commercial CAD and engineering applications.
- Advanced knowledge of three-dimensional geometry, boundary representation modelling, numerical robustness and software performance.
- Practical exposure to modern development practices, including source control, automated testing, debugging, profiling and peer review.
- Experience using and critically evaluating AI assistance for real engineering challenges and code development.
- Mentoring and guidance from experienced software engineers, mathematicians and geometric modelling specialists.
- Stronger problem-solving, technical communication and teamwork skills within a professional engineering environment.
- Valuable career development through experience at Siemens, a global leader in engineering and technology innovation.
