Description

The CNC prototype machinist role involves preparing materials, programming tool paths, setting up and operating multi-axis mill-turn CNC machines, and conducting spot checks on finished components. All of these tasks must be performed while maintaining strict quality and safety standards. You will work both independently and as part of a collaborative team, exercising sound judgment and initiative on each project. Strong communication with internal customers is essential — you’ll provide clear updates on project status, timelines, and any technical considerations that may affect deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare material for machining using manual and CNC machines
  • Program complex 3D parts in a CAD/CAM environment
  • Assemble fixtures, tool holders, and cutting tools to facilitate machining operations
  • Hold close tolerances and validate critical features using hand metrology equipment
  • Work independently on assignments requiring considerable judgment and initiative
  • Collaborate closely with team members to ensure the highest quality product
  • Effectively communicate project status on a regular basis
  • Quickly adapt to new processes with minimal information or support
  • Accurately follow operational and routine maintenance instructions
  • Maintain a safe and clean workspace

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience setting up, operating, and programming CNC machines
  • Experience programming in a 3D CAD/CAM environment (Esprit preferred)
  • Experience holding close tolerances and validating dimensions using hand metrology (calipers, micrometers, surface plate inspection)
  • Ability to program complex 3D parts including general geometries and free-form shapes
  • Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, and interpersonal skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent applicable exp

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multi-axis mill-turn operation and programming experience
  • Knowledge of machine code (G-code/M-code)
  • Experience working with a wide range of materials
  • Experience using horizontal and vertical saws, manual mills, and lathes
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply detailed part drawing requirements
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
