MES Solution Architect & Manager, Manufacturing Applications and Web Development

About the Role

Lexmark is looking for an MES Solution Architect to lead the strategy, design, and support of our manufacturing execution systems (MES) and manufacturing web applications. This is a hybrid role: you will be the hands-on technical architect who sets the direction for MES and manufacturing technology, while also managing the team of MES and Web Developers who build and support those systems.

You will own the "how" — deciding whether a requirement should be built in-house or sourced externally, designing the right technical solution for each manufacturing need, and personally leading key projects from concept to deployment — all while balancing what matters most to the business against cost, risk, and speed.

Key Responsibilities

Solution Architecture & Technology Strategy

• Define and own the technical roadmap and strategy for MES and manufacturing web/data-collection applications.
• Evaluate, select, and design the manufacturing systems architecture to ensure reliable operation, scalability, and growth.
• Research and assess emerging technologies (cloud services, IIoT, Industry 4.0, mobile applications, digital transformation, Artificial intelligence, etc…) and lead their adoption where they add value.
• Determine, for each requirement, whether the best path is internal development or an external/vendor solution — balancing business criticality, cost, timeline, and long-term maintainability.
• Challenge and guide requesters and project stakeholders toward the design that best solves the underlying business need, not just the requested feature.
• Design and implement application security policies and controls to meet corporate requirements and best practices.

Project & Delivery Leadership

• Personally lead and execute select high-priority projects as an individual contributor, in addition to managing the team's project portfolio.
• Negotiate requirements with project leaders/managers, proposing the best technical option for development.
• Manage internal and external development resources to meet delivery commitments within approved project budgets.
• Define, standardize, and implement processes for monitoring, support, and incident management (detection, prevention, resolution, escalation) for critical manufacturing applications, their data, and infrastructure (network and hardware).
• Establish and track support metrics/SLAs for manufacturing applications.
• Design, implement, and maintain the help desk process for the manufacturing support area, meeting company compliance indicators.

Team Management

• Manage the MES and Web Developer team: assign and supervise tasks and projects, and drive continuous improvement of applications and team metrics.
• Develop the team's capabilities in new technologies (cloud, IIoT, mobile, digital transformation, AI, among others) and apply them to improve control and production processes.
• Build and maintain documentation standards (application manuals), train trainers, and identify/standardize repetitive processes.
• Identify improvement opportunities in manufacturing systems processes and convert them into implementable projects.
• Promote and lead Lean Manufacturing and Operational Excellence initiatives, both within the team and across other areas of the company.

Governance & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with company procedures related to international quality, environmental, safety, and occupational health standards.
• Ensure all processes and transactions are properly approved and recorded within required timeframes.

Requirements

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Systems, or a related field.

Experience

• 5–10 years of relevant experience in manufacturing systems/MES, application support, or software/solution architecture (specific level based on candidate's depth of experience).
• Prior experience leading or managing a technical team is required.
• Demonstrated experience architecting solutions and making build-vs-buy technology decisions.

Technical Knowledge

• MES applications (Wonderware, SCADA, or equivalent) and manufacturing/data-collection systems.
• Cloud services and IIoT/AI experience.
• IT security and cybersecurity fundamentals; ISO 27000 knowledge.
• Web servers and web services administration.
• Database administration; Linux server administration and operations.
• Networking fundamentals (IP network configuration).
• PLC applications and manufacturing floor systems integration.
• Programming/scripting languages (Java, .NET, or similar).
• Agile development.
• Virtualization and application/infrastructure monitoring tools.
• PC and application installation, configuration, and troubleshooting (hardware, software, network).
• Advanced Microsoft Office 365 and MS Project.
• PowerBI or similar reporting/analytics tools.
• Familiarity with compliance/quality systems (e.g., ARIBA, TRESS, SAP, or equivalent enterprise systems) a plus.
