Material Planner, Production Control
Description
Production and maintenance at Gigafactory New York depend on having spare parts, packaging, and consumables on site when they are needed. This role owns that plan. If material is late, equipment stays down and production waits. If we overstock, we lock up cash and create obsolete inventory. The Material Planner exists to keep supply continuous and inventory efficient.
You are responsible for end-to-end demand and supply planning and procurement for assigned indirect materials. You own the inventory and purchasing strategy for your categories. You make sure items are delivered to the factory and stocked at the right levels. Categories may include equipment spare parts, packaging, consumables, or other indirect items. You will need a solid understanding of Tesla's supply chain, maintenance, and production operations, and you will be the subject matter expert for your area.
The work covers daily supply management, purchasing, status reporting, escalation, and supplier execution. You will place and manage purchase orders, set planning parameters such as safety stock, reorder points, min/max, and lead times, and deploy inventory and buying strategies. You will work with Maintenance, Production, Quality, Supply Chain, Finance, NPI, and suppliers. You will also build mathematical models and dashboards to monitor demand, failure rates, and inventory, and you will keep improving how planning and buying are done.
Responsibilities
- Own demand and supply planning and procurement for spare parts, packaging, and consumables supporting production, maintenance, and engineering. Balance service levels against inventory investment
- Set and maintain planning parameters and master data in ERP/MRP, including safety stock, reorder points, min/max, lead times, sourcing, inventory locations, and regulatory constraints
- Monitor inventory positions, supplier performance, and supply constraints. Maintain a weekly exception list for parts with availability issues, drive recovery plans, and escalate material and financial impact to leadership
- Partner with Maintenance and Engineering on spare parts strategy. Set stocking levels using PM schedules, equipment criticality, MTBF, failure rates, and consumption history, and build models that predict material requirements
- Execute purchasing for assigned parts, including purchase orders, replenishment, and supplier follow-up. Deploy inventory and buying strategies, including consignment or VMI for long-lead and critical spares. Support supplier onboarding and escalate to GSM, Quality, Engineering, or Accounts Payable when needed
- Own planning KPIs including service level/OTIF, forecast accuracy/MAPE, past due and backorders, and excess and obsolete inventory. Improve planning processes, standard work, MRP data quality, and reporting using SQL, Power BI, and Excel
- Run the weekly operating rhythm with internal customers and suppliers. Use analytics and AI tools to catch exceptions earlier and adjust plans as factory constraints change
Requirements
- Degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Data Analytics, Mathematics, or equivalent experience, plus at least 3 years of experience in Demand, Material, Supply, or Inventory Planning, or in Procurement
- Strong knowledge of MRP/ERP in discrete manufacturing, including bills of material, planning attributes, product lifecycle, procure-to-pay, and supply chain operations
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, with attention to detail, ownership, and follow-through
- Advanced Excel skills (pivots, Power Query, complex formulas) and experience building dashboards in Power BI or a similar BI tool. SQL experience is a plus
- Knowledge of demand and supply planning, procurement, and spare parts or hardware service models, with the ability to work across technical and non-technical teams
- Clear written and verbal communication, including leadership updates on supply risk and recovery. Hands-on experience with AI tools and workflows is preferred
