About this opportunity:

Ericsson Research Area Security provides Ericsson business and development units with security competence, architectures, and solutions for platforms, networks, and services. Our research covers cryptography, secure networking, AI/ML security, service and application security, identity management, privacy, and methods for developing and evaluating security systems. We focus on new concepts and methods, patents, and standardisation.

This Master's thesis will be hosted by Ericsson Research in Kista and will be part of an international team of world-class researchers with expertise in machine learning and network security.

The objective is to conduct a systematic mapping and systematization of knowledge on neuro-symbolic AI, with particular attention to its potential role in autonomous and intent-based networking. The thesis will investigate the existing research landscape and develop a structured understanding of the field. The expected primary contribution is a taxonomy and knowledge structure derived from existing research and relevant standards.

What you will do:

The thesis will follow a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) or Systematisation of Knowledge (SoK) methodology and investigate:

  • What classes of neuro-symbolic AI approaches have been proposed, and how do they represent knowledge, entities, states, transitions, or constraints?
  • How are responsibilities divided between neural and symbolic components, and how are they evaluated?
  • Which approaches are potentially applicable to autonomous or intent-based networking, and how do concepts in the literature relate to models defined by relevant networking standards?
  • What research, engineering, or standardisation gaps can be identified from this comparison?

You will review and classify relevant research, analyse applicable standards, develop the taxonomy and knowledge structure, and document the findings in a Master's thesis.

The skills you bring:

  • You are enrolled in a Master's programme in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, or an equivalent field.
  • You have solid software-development experience.
  • You are interested in one or more of the following areas: neuro-symbolic AI, large language models, autonomous systems, automation, or security.
  • You have strong analytical, research, and technical writing skills.

Experience with systematic literature reviews is considered a plus. Relevant project experience is highly valued, so please describe completed projects and your specific role in them. Technical reports, such as school assignments or blog posts, may also be included as supporting material.

Please submit your application with a brief personal letter and CV. Candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as suitable applicants will be interviewed as applications are received.
