Manager, Equipment Engineering & Maintenance

Description

The Manager, Production Control Equipment Engineering and Maintenance (PCEEM) leads the Giga Texas organization that designs, maintains, and improves Production Control material-handling equipment for all GFTX programs. This role delivers required equipment performance, gets excellent results from its people, and builds management systems that keep the fleet safe to operate, highly available, and reliable at the quality and cycle rate production needs. 

You will own a 15,000+ asset portfolio (~$10M+ annual OpEx) serving 30+ cost centers across production shops and external warehouses: powered industrial vehicles (PIV), manual material-handling equipment, and fixed/automated systems. You will lead an organization of 150+ people (Associate Managers, supervisors, technicians, and mechanical, controls, and software engineers) and report to the Director, Production Control. 

Responsibilities

• Lead the PCEEM organization: hire, coach, and develop Associate Managers, supervisors, technicians, and engineers across PIV, manual/fabrication, and fixed/automated equipment
• Own Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost for assigned equipment systems, sustaining high availability on automated material-handling equipment and high technician labor utilization
• Establish and improve preventative maintenance, spare-parts, and breakdown-response systems for PIVs, AMRs, VRCs, dock equipment, chargers, dollies, racks, highbay racking, and other automated and semi-automated PC systems
• Direct escalated day-to-day production coverage with rapid response on down equipment to protect UPH and material flow; investigate and implement RCCA countermeasures to prevent repetitive failures; develop, document, and train troubleshooting and repair processes
• Run an engineering safety program (LOTO, 5S, Arc Flash, PPE, pedestrian/PIV interaction) and lead by example
• Own specification, design, qualification, installation, and site acceptance of new PC equipment, including AMRs, VRCs, automated conveyance, automated trailers, ASRS support equipment, recycling-center equipment, and in-house automation
• Partner with Material Flow Engineering, Packaging, Production, Quality, Construction, EHS, IT, and shop leadership from Day 0 planning through ramp, managing concurrent multi-department and contractor projects and covering off-hours calls and shift gaps as needed
• Manage concurrent CapEx and OpEx programs: bottoms-up budgets, rent-versus-buy, spares and consumables, vendor management, and contractor execution
• Drive cost and headcount out of material flow through automation, in-house fabrication, fleet standardization, and rental reduction
• Deploy and scale fleet-control systems (RTLS, equipment/fleet management tools, RFID and dolly tracking, telemetry, and charging infrastructure); standardize footprints, naming, and maintenance practices and share proven designs with other Tesla sites

Requirements

• Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or related engineering, or equivalent experience
• Successful experience leading and developing a technical team across engineering and maintenance disciplines (engineers, supervisors, and technicians)
• Minimum of 10 years of engineering and/or maintenance in a high-volume manufacturing or industrial environment
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning for a large technical organization (100+ people) and a multi-million-dollar OpEx/CapEx portfolio
• Hands-on familiarity with material-handling equipment: PIVs, AMRs/AGVs, vertical conveyance (VRCs/ASRS), conveyors, and manual equipment (dollies and racks)
• Adept at industrial safety practices and policies for high-volume manufacturing, including OSHA, LOTO, and Arc Flash
• Broad experience with lean manufacturing systems and methodologies, including tier accountability, layered auditing, continuous improvement, and kaizen
• Experience using CMMS to schedule preventative maintenance, manage work orders, and track reliability
• Detail oriented, with strong record-keeping and organizational skills and the ability to manage a large workload while contributing to a positive, team-oriented work environment
• Availability to cover shifts of all schedules for PTO/absences as needed, and availability for off-hours calls
