Description and Requirements
Lead AI Systems Architect – PC Imaging
Focused on a bold vision to deliver smarter technology for all, Lenovo is developing world-changing technologies that create a more inclusive, trustworthy and sustainable digital society. By designing, engineering and building the world’s most complete portfolio of smart devices and infrastructure, we are also leading an Intelligent Transformation – to create better experiences and opportunities for millions of customers around the world. Join us in defining our world of tomorrow and creating smarter technology for all!
Who You’ll Work With
At Lenovo, we manufacture one of the world’s broadest portfolios of connected products, including PCs, tablets, smartphones, workstations, and smart collaboration solutions. We are also building innovative software and services that are transforming how people work, communicate, and create.
Based in Yokohama, Japan, this role sits within Lenovo’s Smart Component Center of Excellence in the PC product organization. You will collaborate with global engineering and product teams, platform architects, and external technology partners.
About Our Team
Our Yokohama engineers and architects bring expertise in cameras, image quality, computer vision, AI, sensing, and PC technology. We seek an AI systems architect who complements this imaging expertise with strong computer architecture and hardware–software co-design capabilities. Prior imaging experience is preferred; you can develop it with our domain specialists.
What You'll Do
As a hands-on technical lead, you will own system-level architecture decisions and integration for next-generation PC imaging—not detailed implementation of every layer. Partnering with specialists, you will turn product needs into scalable solutions and validate hardware–software trade-offs through prototypes and measurement. The role includes a path toward broader team leadership within approximately two years.
- Translate product use cases into AI system architectures, technical requirements, and delivery roadmaps for PC imaging and sensing.
- Partition workloads across CPUs, GPUs, NPUs, ISPs, and other accelerators, considering runtime support, memory hierarchy, bandwidth, and data movement. Evaluate cloud integration where justified by user needs, privacy, connectivity, and efficiency.
- Lead cross-layer optimization from hardware and firmware through operating systems, AI runtimes, and applications, balancing image quality, latency, sustained performance, power, thermals, memory, cost, security, and scalability.
- Align camera, image-quality, software, platform, and silicon specialists on integration decisions, implementation ownership, and system risks across global teams and partners.
- Build prototypes and representative workloads to identify bottlenecks, validate end-to-end trade-offs, and demonstrate customer value.
- Establish a measurement-driven evaluation workflow using available target platforms, SDKs, profiling, power and memory instrumentation, and imaging lab resources. Recommend tools, automation, vendor support, and access plans to address gaps with platform, lab, and budget owners.
- Mentor engineers and support team development, progressively assuming broader leadership responsibilities with the expectation of becoming a key Yokohama team leader within approximately two years.
- Contribute to technology strategy, intellectual property creation, design standards, and future product roadmaps.
Position Requirements:
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience. CE/EE backgrounds are particularly aligned; demonstrated system architecture capability is essential.
- Demonstrated architecture ownership for on-device or edge AI systems, including hardware-aware workload deployment and measured system-level optimization, with a track record of guiding architecture into product delivery.
- Strong computer architecture and hardware–software co-design expertise covering CPU/GPU/NPU capabilities, accelerator integration, memory hierarchy, AI runtimes, and model deployment.
- Experience in workload partitioning and system trade-offs across latency, performance, power, thermals, memory bandwidth and footprint, data movement, cost, security, and scalability.
- Cross-layer integration and debugging experience spanning hardware, firmware, drivers, operating systems, AI frameworks, and applications.
- Hands-on programming or scripting capability for prototypes, benchmarks, and analysis, plus experience using tracing, profiling, and power and memory measurements to validate architectural decisions.
- Ability to turn product requirements into executable plans, communicate and document trade-offs clearly, and influence cross-functional teams without relying on direct authority.
- Interest in PC imaging and willingness to learn camera pipelines and image-quality technologies with domain experts.
- Professional English communication skills for collaboration with global teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Platform architecture experience in PCs, mobile devices, automotive, robotics, consumer electronics, embedded systems, or semiconductors.
- Hybrid edge/cloud AI experience, including privacy, connectivity, latency, and workload-placement trade-offs.
- Silicon-vendor SDK, accelerator toolchain, model optimization, or heterogeneous scheduling experience for real-time vision workloads.
- Imaging or computer-vision expertise, such as sensors, optics, ISP pipelines, computational imaging, image-quality tuning, camera integration, or video collaboration.
- Proficiency in Python, C, or C++, and experience with Windows, Linux, Android, or real-time embedded systems.
- Experience leading engineering teams or cross-functional programs, setting technical direction, coordinating delivery, and mentoring engineers. Prior people management is an advantage, not a requirement.
- Experience developing technical strategy and aligning global, cross-functional stakeholders.
- Japanese speaking proficiency for local collaboration is preferred, but not required.
