This position is expected to start around January or February 2027 and continue through the entire Spring term (ending approximately May 2027 or later, if available). We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time (40 hours/week) and on-site, for most internships. Our internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in an academic program. Recent graduates seeking employment after graduation and not returning to school should apply for full-time positions, not internships.

International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

Responsibilities

Your application for the Factory Engineering Internships will be considered across all opportunities for the teams listed below: 

Electrical Engineer:

  • Tesla is looking for an Electrical Engineer Intern to join our factory infrastructure engineering team in Austin, TX. You will play a pivotal role in the design of complex manufacturing facilities, assisting with design, drafting, and basic 3D modeling in Revit for electrical systems including power, lighting, security, and telecom. You will use the National Electric Code to produce construction drawings, help assemble drawing packages, review submittals and shop drawings, and respond to RFIs. You will collaborate with engineers across disciplines, interface with construction trades, and complete regular field walks to confirm installation progress and adherence to design. The ideal candidate is working toward a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, has knowledge of Revit MEP, and can multi-task and perform at a high level in an extremely fast-paced environment.

BIM Engineer:

  • Tesla’s Factory Engineering team is seeking a highly motivated BIM Engineer Intern to support BIM / VDC Specialists on the Giga Texas project. You will assist with day-to-day model coordination, data integration, and digital construction workflows, and serve as a spatial coordinator for factory systems and manufacturing tools in your assigned area. You will help develop data-rich building models in Revit and Navisworks, manage model updates, clash detection, and issue tracking across multi-disciplinary teams, and support quantity takeoffs and model-based data extraction. You will also participate in design coordination meetings and help maintain model organization, data standards, and version control in a cloud-hosted environment. The ideal candidate is pursuing a degree in Construction Management, Civil, Architectural, or Mechanical Engineering, has experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks, and brings strong organizational and communication skills with excellent attention to detail.

Controls Engineer:

  • Tesla is looking for a Controls Engineer Intern to join our factory infrastructure engineering team in Austin, TX. You will support the design of complex manufacturing facilities, including sizing and selection of instruments and control devices used to operate mechanical and process systems such as HVAC, chilled water, and compressed air. You will create and update controls documentation and drawings, initiate instrument datasheets and RFQ packages, perform technical bid evaluations, and work with vendors and contractors to meet Tesla quality and documentation standards. You will also contribute to plant-wide control network architecture, work with HMI developers to improve data exchange and usability, review 2D and 3D drawings, and support construction execution as well as system outages. The ideal candidate has experience with control valve sizing, instrument datasheets, and ANSI instrumentation standards, can review mechanical and process drawings to size flow, pressure, and temperature sensors, and is familiar with controls software such as SPI (InTools), industrial networks, and PLC platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Beckhoff.

Mechanical Design Engineer:

  • The Mechanical Design team designs mechanical and process systems for factory infrastructure and complex manufacturing, including HVAC, dust collection, abatement, plumbing, high-pressure and hazardous chemical, gas, and fluid systems, manufacturing and data center cooling, and water/wastewater treatment. As a Mechanical Design Engineer Intern, you will apply physics principles to real-world fluid systems design, take ownership of project scope, and coordinate with adjacent disciplines including architecture, civil, structural, controls, and lab owners. The ideal candidate has a strong background in math, physics, fluids, and thermodynamics, is willing to take initiative coordinating between adjacent teams, and has experience with tools such as Excel, Pipe Flo, Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, CFD, Revizto, and Bluebeam. Controls engineering knowledge is a plus.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve technical problems
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a fast-paced construction or manufacturing environment
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with BIM or CAD tools such as Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam (Electrical Engineer, BIM Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer)
  • Familiarity with industrial controls, instrumentation, and PLC platforms such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Beckhoff (Controls Engineer; plus for Mechanical Design Engineer)
  • Coursework or project experience in fluids, thermodynamics, HVAC, or process systems, including tools such as Pipe Flo, MATLAB, or CFD (Mechanical Design Engineer)
