Description

The Innovation & Design Engineer in Service Supply Chain will lead end-to-end design of service distribution centers and service center parts storage across Tesla’s East and West Coast network. Using real-world simulation, digital twins, and AI tools, this role will densify and optimize the existing DC network while pioneering next-gen warehouses and automation. The ideal candidate brings a strong simulation background with warehouse design and industrial engineering expertise, plus a proven record taking large-scale distribution centers from concept through firm engineering to full launch.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain digital twins and real-world simulation models (FlexSim or equivalent) of service DCs and parts storage to evaluate throughput, congestion, staffing, material handling, and layout scenarios before build
  • Apply AI-enabled simulation and analytics tools to accelerate scenario analysis, validate design alternatives, and continuously improve digital twin accuracy
  • Create 2D/3D visualizations of cube space utilization and define unique, trackable KPIs aligned to team requirements
  • Lead end-to-end design of new service distribution centers — from concept development and capacity planning through detailed engineering and operational launch
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive facility design documentation including floor layout controls, flow path diagrams, material handling specifications, and best practice handbooks
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, supply chain planning, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable, data-driven facility design solutions — leveraging slotting strategies, flow modeling, and simulation outputs
  • Lead external partners (GCs, consultants, equipment vendors) through design and construction phases; conduct benchmarking and root cause analysis to identify inefficiencies and keep Tesla's DC network best-in-class

Requirements

  • Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain, or related field, or equivalent experience with 3–5 years of experience designing and launching large-scale distribution centers from concept through live operations
  • Strong warehouse design and simulation background with solid industrial engineering fundamentals; proficiency in 2D/3D facility design tools (AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent BIM platforms)
  • Experience with material handling systems and automation technologies including AS/RS, GTP, conveyor systems, and AMRs
  • Proven ability to manage cross-functional projects across design, construction, and operations teams — including GCs, architects, and real estate partners through the full project lifecycle
  • Familiarity with slotting strategies, space utilization modeling, flow path optimization, and WMS systems; ability to extract and analyze operational data via SQL
  • Strong analytical skills with working knowledge of lean/six sigma methodologies applied to facility design and layout optimization
  • Experience in automotive, aftermarket parts, or high-SKU, high-velocity distribution environments preferred; innovative, critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
