Head of Communications
Location: San Jose/Bay Area, California
Reports to: Chief Commercial Officer
Experience Level: Senior Director / Director
Job Summary:
Semtech is executing a company-wide transformation from a product-centric operator into a customer-centric, demand-generating growth company. The Head of Communications will build Semtech's communications function from the ground up, owning three things: the executive platforms of the CEO and CCO, message discipline across the company's brand, narrative repositioning and the internal narrative that carries employees through the transformation. This is a hands-on, player-coach role with a direct line to the CEO and CCO and an enterprise-wide mandate.
Responsibilities:
- Own executive communications for the CEO and CCO — earnings narrative, prepared remarks, investor and board messaging, and all-hands content — replacing piecemeal assembly with a single owner and a defined preparation cadence.
- Build and maintain the messaging architecture that ladders every business unit, product, and regional story into one Semtech narrative, and lead message discipline for Project Amplify (the company's brand and narrative repositioning) across sales, marketing, web, PR, and internal channels.
- Stand up internal communications as a function — cadence, channels, leader toolkits, and feedback loops — so employees understand company strategy and how their work contributes to it.
- Launch and run an executive thought-leadership program (keynotes, bylines, industry-analyst briefings, executive digital presence) that positions Semtech's leaders as authorities in their markets.
- Build trusted cross-functional relationships (Sales, Marketing, Investor Relations, People/HR, Legal, Business Units) and build the communications team and agency model over time.
- Develop and maintain issues and crisis communications playbooks, including a trained executive team and a clear spokesperson protocol.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Business, or a related field (advanced degree a plus)
- 12+ years of progressive experience in corporate and executive communications, including at least 5 years leading a communications function or a major enterprise communications program
- Proven experience as trusted communications counsel and principal writer to a CEO or C-suite executive at a publicly traded company
- Track record leading communications through a rebrand, repositioning, merger, integration, or major business transformation
- Hands-on experience with the earnings cycle — narrative development, prepared remarks, and executive preparation — in partnership with a CFO and Investor Relations
- Working knowledge of public-company communications: Regulation FD, quiet periods, and disclosure controls
- Exceptional writing across executive forms — speeches, earnings talk tracks, bylines, and all-hands content — with a portfolio to prove it
- Experience owning internal communications through significant organizational change, with measured impact on employee understanding and alignment
- Credibility with C-suite and board-level stakeholders; proven ability to drive results through influence in a matrix organization without direct authority
- Highest standards of discretion and confidentiality; calm and decisive under pressure, including in issues and crisis situations
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in semiconductor, hardware, or complex B2B technology environments; able to engage credibly with engineers, business unit leaders, customers, and industry analysts
- Hands-on leadership of a multi-phase brand or narrative transformation in partnership with external brand and strategic communications firms
- Experience supporting investor days, sell-side interactions, and industry-analyst programs
- Global communications experience across the Americas, EMEA, and APAC, working with both technical and commercial audiences
- Fluency in modern communications measurement (message pull-through, share of voice, employee sentiment) and comfort using AI-enabled tools to raise the speed and quality of communications work
