About the role

Uber is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead our Delivery business in South Africa.

This is an end-to-end business leadership role spanning Uber’s Restaurants and Retail/Grocery businesses, with responsibility for setting the South Africa strategy, owning business performance, driving sustainable growth, and leading the local organization.

South Africa is a significant and strategically important market for Uber, with the Restaurants business alone representing an approximately $200M marketplace and the broader Delivery opportunity continuing to expand.

The successful candidate will combine strong commercial and operational judgment with the ability to lead at both strategic and highly practical levels. We are looking for someone who can see the forest and the trees: setting a clear long-term direction while staying close enough to the business to understand what is happening, diagnose problems, make decisions, and drive execution.

This role is based in Johannesburg and requires regular in-office presence, including Tuesday through Thursday.

Key responsibilities

  • Own the overall strategy and performance of Uber’s South Africa Delivery business across Restaurants and Retail/Grocery.
  • Take end-to-end accountability for growth, marketplace performance, revenue, profitability, operational execution, customer experience, and long-term business health.
  • Develop a clear multi-year strategy for South Africa while translating that strategy into measurable priorities, operating plans, and execution.
  • Lead, develop, and hold accountable a high-performing local leadership team across commercial, operations, strategy, and other key functions.
  • Stay close to the details of the business. Use data, customer and partner insights, and operational signals to identify problems, understand root causes, and drive action.
  • Balance the needs of a multi-sided marketplace across consumers, merchants, retailers, and couriers, making thoughtful trade-offs across growth, experience, selection, reliability, and economics.
  • Build and deepen relationships with major restaurant groups, retailers, grocery partners, and other strategic commercial partners.
  • Identify new growth opportunities across the broader Delivery ecosystem and determine where Uber should invest people, time, and capital.
  • Own financial planning and business performance, including forecasting, investment decisions, resource allocation, and progress against key business metrics.
  • Understand the competitive landscape and ensure Uber develops differentiated propositions for consumers and partners in the South African market.
  • Partner effectively across Uber’s regional and global organization, including Product, Operations, Finance, Marketing, Legal, Policy, People, and Technology.
  • Influence priorities and deliver outcomes in a highly matrixed global organization, including where teams or resources do not report directly to the South Africa GM.
  • Represent Uber externally with senior commercial partners, industry stakeholders, regulators, and other relevant organizations.
  • Build a strong leadership bench and develop future leaders within the South Africa organization.
  • Lead the business through change while creating clarity, accountability, and confidence for the local team.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Significant senior leadership experience with responsibility for a business, market, P&L, or large multi-functional organization.
  • Demonstrated experience owning commercial and operational performance, with the ability to move comfortably between strategy and detailed execution.
  • Strong financial and business acumen, including experience managing a P&L, setting investment priorities, and making trade-offs across growth and profitability.
  • Proven experience leading leaders and managers, building high-performing teams, and developing senior talent.
  • Strong analytical capability and a track record of using data to diagnose business problems and make decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate close to the details of a business while maintaining a broader strategic perspective.
  • Strong commercial instincts and experience developing partnerships, negotiating with senior stakeholders, and creating sustainable growth.
  • Experience operating in complex, matrixed organizations and influencing outcomes without relying solely on direct authority.
  • Strong knowledge of the South African business environment, consumer landscape, and competitive dynamics.
  • Excellent executive communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • High ownership, sound judgment, resilience, and comfort operating in a fast-moving environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred qualifications

  • Leadership experience within marketplaces, e-commerce, consumer technology, retail/grocery, logistics, on-demand services, or another complex consumer business.
  • Experience operating a multi-sided marketplace involving consumers, commercial partners, and supply or logistics networks.
  • Experience across both 0-to-1 business building and scaling established businesses.
  • Experience leading through significant growth, transformation, or organizational change.
  • Experience working across regional and global teams while maintaining clear accountability for local market outcomes.
  • Established networks across South African technology, retail, consumer, commercial, or related industries.
  • Experience representing a business with senior external stakeholders, including large enterprise partners and government or regulatory bodies.

Success in this role

Success will mean building a high-performing, sustainable South Africa Delivery business across Restaurants and Retail/Grocery.

The GM will be expected to deliver strong growth and financial performance while improving the health of the broader marketplace for consumers, merchants, retailers, and couriers. Just as importantly, success means creating a high-performing local organization with clear priorities, strong leaders, and a culture of accountability.

The strongest GM will be able to move seamlessly between setting the direction for the business and getting into the details when something is not working, while using Uber’s broader regional and global capabilities to deliver better outcomes for South Africa.
