Field Incident Investigator, Central North America

Description

Tesla is looking for an exceptional field incident investigator with a background in collision reconstruction and forensic analysis for the Field Quality, Data Analysis and Engineering team.  Based out of Central North America (remote work location in Central North America to be determined with successful candidate), this role will support the Incident Investigation, Safety and Regulatory & Legal teams.  The individual will be dedicated to investigations of field incidents, with a focus on pulling, assessing and summarizing vehicle information from CAN (Controller Area Network) logs, EDR (Event Data Recorder) data and other telemetry sources to respond to regulatory information requests.  In addition, the individual will occasionally be tasked with conducting field investigations to support engineering teams and regulatory requests, including travel for physical inspections of vehicles and incident sites. 

Responsibilities

• Assess field incidents for compliance with regulatory reporting 
• Compile CAN log, EDR and other telemetry data for a given incident or incidents to meet information requests from regulatory authorities 
• Conduct investigations of field incidents to support engineering, regulatory, and legal requests
• Perform inspections of incident vehicles and incident sites, including documentation and collection of electronic data 
• Create data visualizations to communicate results of data assessments 
• Participate in reviews of incidents with vehicle engineering, safety, and AI teams within Tesla for development input and continuous vehicle improvement   

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or specific training or accreditation in collision reconstruction/investigation, or equivalent experience
• At least 7 years of vehicle forensic analysis experience, including analysis of electronic vehicle data (CAN and EDR), incident investigation and accident reconstruction 
• Experience in vehicle crash investigations (including vehicle/scene inspections, Event Data Recorder (EDR) collection, forensic photography, and scene scanning equipment) 
• Experience working with local and/or federal law enforcement personnel regarding case investigations desired 
• Ability to quickly learn new technologies and aptitude for understanding automotive vehicle systems 
• Travel to incident sites and vehicles to perform inspections  
• Demonstrated ability to manage databases and multiple data streams 
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills 
• Mechanical aptitude and experience with automotive components
