Engineering Technician, Cell Cathode Engineering
Description
Tesla's Cell Cathode Engineering Team is recruiting for an Engineering Technician with hands-on analytical laboratory experience. This position will support daily operations of the analytical lab, with a focus on coin cell fabrication and electrochemical testing of battery materials. A successful candidate will be a key member of the material evaluation team, responsible for sample preparation, test execution, data quality, and laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare, track, and test cathode material samples in support of material development and evaluation
- Prepare electrodes and assemble coin cells, including slurry mixing, coating, drying, electrolyte filling and crimping in a glovebox
- Operate and support analytical instruments used for material characterization (e.g., particle size, surface area, ICP, and related methods)
- Perform instrument calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and common chemical waste handling
- Document procedures, reagents, key observations, and experimental data with high attention to detail
- Compile, organize, and share test data with engineers; assist with basic data review
- Assist in developing and validating new test methods
- Adhere to company policies for safety and conduct
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Materials, or other related engineering/science areas, and/or demonstrated equivalence in work experience associated with the role, or equivalent experience
- Hands-on experience in an analytical or battery testing laboratory
- Experience building coin cells and running electrochemical tests is strongly preferred
- Team collaboration and results delivery on schedule
- Excellent documentation and written communication
- Experience with electrochemical cyclers (e.g., Neware, Arbin) is a plus
- Experience with analytical methods such as ICP, particle size distribution, and surface area, including basic data review, is a plus
- Creative approach to problem solving, with willingness to learn and try new things
- Familiar with Microsoft Office tools including Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint
Essential Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in a laboratory environment
- Ability to perform repetitive, fine-motor tasks such as electrode punching, cell assembly, and sample preparation
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and respirator as needed
- Ability to work with chemicals, solvents, and battery materials following EHS procedures
