Job Title:

Engineer II, Systems and Controls Engineering

Job Description:

The Role

Entegris is seeking a Control Systems Engineer II to join the Gas Microcontamination Control (GMC) team in San Luis Obispo. This role designs, develops, implements, validates, and supports automated control systems for advanced gas purification equipment and related process systems used in demanding high-purity applications.

The engineer will contribute to Entegris’ vision of becoming the leading AI-native electronic materials and purity platform by creating secure, connected, data-ready automation solutions that improve equipment performance, reliability, serviceability, and customer value. The role combines strong industrial controls fundamentals with practical use of engineering data, analytics, simulation, and emerging AI-enabled tools.

What You'll Do

  • Control System Design and Implementation: Develop PLC, HMI, and industrial control solutions from requirements definition through design, programming, integration, testing, commissioning, and lifecycle support.
  • Process Automation: Translate process requirements, P&IDs, sequence-of-operations documents, cause-and-effect matrices, and safety requirements into reliable control strategies for gas purification and material delivery systems.
  • Software and Hardware Engineering: Specify and integrate controllers, industrial networks, instrumentation, analyzers, valves, drives, safety devices, panels, and supporting electrical hardware.
  • Data-Ready and AI-Native Architecture: Design controls that generate contextualized, trustworthy, and secure operational data suitable for diagnostics, analytics, digital twins, predictive insights, and future AI-assisted decision support.
  • Intelligent Diagnostics: Develop alarm management, equipment health indicators, event logging, trending, and diagnostic functions that accelerate troubleshooting and support condition-based and predictive maintenance.
  • Verification and Validation: Create and execute software test plans, simulation-based tests, factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests, and commissioning procedures; document results and resolve issues systematically.
  • Continuous Improvement: Use process data and structured problem-solving methods to improve cycle time, stability, throughput, quality, energy use, maintainability, and equipment availability.
  • Standards and Reuse: Develop modular, scalable, and reusable software using established coding standards, libraries, templates, version control, and formal change-management practices.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with process, mechanical, electrical, software, manufacturing, quality, field service, suppliers, and customer-facing teams to deliver robust solutions.
  • Cybersecurity and Compliance: Apply approved industrial cybersecurity, access control, backup, recovery, documentation, and configuration-management practices throughout the control-system lifecycle.
  • Technical Support: Troubleshoot hardware, software, communication, and process-control issues; perform root-cause analysis and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Other Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned in support of GMC and Entegris business priorities.

What We Seek

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience: 2-4 years of hands-on controls, automation, or process-control engineering experience in a process-industry environment. Relevant industries may include semiconductor, specialty gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, energy, water treatment, or other highly automated manufacturing operations.
  • Controls Experience: Demonstrated experience designing, programming, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting PLC- and HMI-based industrial control systems.
  • Process Knowledge: Working knowledge of instrumentation, process control, feedback loops, interlocks, permissives, alarms, sequencing, and industrial communication networks.
  • Engineering Documentation: Ability to create and interpret control narratives, functional specifications, I/O lists, P&IDs, electrical drawings, network diagrams, test protocols, and operating or maintenance documentation.
  • Software Discipline: Experience with structured software development, source/version control, peer review, defect tracking, release management, and controlled change processes.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines and locations.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to analyze complex equipment and process issues, prioritize work, manage assignments with limited supervision, and deliver practical, maintainable solutions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Automation Platforms: Experience with Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 / RSLogix, Siemens TIA Portal, Schneider Machine Expert, or comparable PLC platforms; experience with industrial HMI/SCADA platforms such as FactoryTalk, Ignition, or GP-Pro EX is beneficial.
  • Programming and Data: Exposure to C, C#, Python, SQL, scripting, APIs, data historians, edge computing, or industrial data platforms is beneficial.
  • Advanced Engineering Methods: Exposure to simulation, model-based systems engineering, digital twins, data analytics, machine learning, or AI-assisted engineering workflows is beneficial.
  • Regulated or High-Purity Systems: Experience with high-purity gas systems, semiconductor equipment, hazardous processes, functional safety, or regulated manufacturing environments is beneficial.
