Experience Required- 5 -8 years in marine / offshore electrical engineering
Education - Bachelor’s degree in Electrical / Electrical & Electronics Engineering (Marine Engineering qualification is an added advantage)
Role Purpose
The Marine Engineer – Electrical is responsible for supporting the engineering design, specification review and technical coordination of electrical systems for marine and offshore vessels. The role works closely with the Bids & Proposals, Project Execution and Engineering teams to ensure that electrical scope is technically sound, class-compliant, correctly interfaced with associated systems, and delivered on schedule.
Scope of Systems
• LV / MV switchboards and distribution systems
• Generators, alternators and prime mover interfaces
• Transformers and neutral earthing resistors (NER)
• Motors, propulsion drives and variable frequency drives (VFDs)
• Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and shore power / charging systems
• UPS and emergency / essential power systems
• Power Management Systems (PMS) and Integrated Automation Systems (IAS) interfaces
• Cabling, earthing and hazardous area (HazLoc) installations
Key Responsibilities
• Study customer specifications, vessel general arrangement drawings and class rules; support preparation of electrical load lists, single line diagrams (SLDs) and system architecture.
• Prepare and review technical specifications, equipment lists, cable schedules and material take-offs for the electrical package.
• Support vendor enquiries, technical clarifications, and preparation of technical bid evaluations and comparison sheets.
• Assist in identifying and documenting assumptions, deviations, exclusions and clarifications for customer and internal submissions.
• Coordinate interfaces between electrical systems and PMS, IAS, propulsion, navigation and safety systems.
• Verify compliance with SOLAS, IMO, and classification society requirements (DNV, ABS, LR, KR, RINA, BV) and applicable cyber security notations.
• Support cost estimation covering equipment, engineering, installation and commissioning scope.
• Participate in technical discussions with customers, vendors and classification societies during bid and execution phases.
• Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Harbor/Site Acceptance Tests (HAT/SAT) and commissioning activities as required.
• Maintain updated vendor data, reference documentation, lessons learned and standard specification templates.
Qualifications and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical / Electrical & Electronics Engineering; a Marine Engineering qualification is an added advantage.
• 5 years of experience in marine, offshore or shipyard electrical engineering, in design, bids or commissioning roles.
• Exposure to at least one major marine electrical equipment package (switchboards, drives, BESS, generators, or transformers).
• Working knowledge of marine classification and statutory rules applicable to electrical systems.
• Experience in vendor coordination, technical evaluation and proposal preparation is preferred.
• Willingness to travel to shipyards, vendor works and customer sites as needed.
Skill Area
Core technical - Hands-on knowledge of LV/MV switchboards, transformers, generators, motors, propulsion drives, UPS and battery energy storage systems (BESS)
Automation & Controls- Working exposure to Power Management Systems (PMS) and Integrated Automation Systems (IAS), and their interfaces with the electrical network
Class & statutory- Familiarity with SOLAS, IMO and class society rules (DNV, ABS, LR, KR, RINA, BV) applicable to marine electrical installations
Cyber security- Basic awareness of marine cyber security notations and network segregation principles
Documentation- Ability to read and interpret SLDs, load lists, cable schedules, GA drawings and equipment datasheets
Tools- MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, AutoCAD (basic), MS Teams and SharePoint
Soft skills- Clear written and verbal English, structured documentation, vendor coordination, and ability to work with global teams across time zones
Nice to Have
• Exposure to DP-2 / DP-3 vessels, RoRo, bunker vessels, or autonomous / remotely operated vessels.
• Experience with containerized BESS solutions and shore power charging (MCS) systems.
• Familiarity with marine cyber security (Cyber Essential / Cyber Resilience) notations and network hardening.
• Prior experience working with European, Chinese or Korean marine electrical equipment suppliers.
