As part of Global Environmental Health & Safety (GEHS), the Fremont site EHS team provides leadership and expertise to protect employees and the environment, manage EHS risk, and support safe, compliant, and reliable business operations.
The impact you’ll make
The Environmental Engineer is responsible for the compliance and continual improvement of environmental programs for Bay Area Lam sites, applying and implementing requirements from a systematic perspective and integrating them into Lam’s business culture. This includes management of Lam’s environmental regulatory compliance, environmental permits, programs, procedures, policies, and support of ISO14001 registration. This position performs a variety of work to ensure compliance through explanation of permit terms and regulatory obligations, recommendation of appropriate action to assure conformance to current and new regulatory requirements, support of operational activities to minimize pollution, oversee or manage projects, maintain, and improve the EHS management system. This position collaborates with all departments and functions as necessary for effective and compliance and Bay Area sustainability activities.
What you’ll do
As the primary owner of environmental programs for Lam's Bay Area sites, you will:
- Implement environmental programs, including air emissions control, wastewater treatment, stormwater management, waste management, and sustainability.
- Be responsible for all site environmental programs, procedures, and permits.
- Obtain and manage all environmental-related permits, including the development of operations compliance plans, legal registries, chemical use and storage threshold monitoring, and legal registries.
- Submit regulatory permit renewals, monitoring reports, annual operating reports, and calculations as required to the regulatory agencies as well as internal reporting for sustainability metrics and reporting.
- Manage the hazardous waste program, including waste identification, waste characterization, handling, disposal and minimization.
- Manage agency notifications, inspections and community outreach.
- Ensure all community stakeholders, landlords, and agencies are notified as appropriate for environmental permits, spills and releases, emergency response drills, etc.
- Maintain knowledge of local environmental regulations and monitor upcoming environmental legislation changes.
- Evaluate, interpret, and apply environmental laws, regulations and permits as it relates to the operation of the facility.
- Manage high-risk chemical review and permitting in collaboration with local agencies, Lam Product Groups and Global Workplace Solutions.
- Support management of change activities, including equipment and tool installation, process safety review and R&D chemical use approval, and pro-active prevention and management initiatives.
- Investigates exceedances in wastewater and air emissions and assists with the development of containment and corrective action plans.
- Train personnel to ensure understanding of environmental programs.
- Coordinate stack testing, monitoring, and other testing requirements.
- Be able to perform sampling, as needed.
- Be able to interpret data and develop action plans accordingly.
- Perform environmental inspections and audits.
- Support ISO14001 certification and internal assessment program.
Who we’re looking for
- Minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, or other related field.
- Prior experience managing air emissions permits, wastewater/hazardous waste treatment permits, stormwater management and hazardous waste management; strong understanding of wastewater treatment plant and air scrubber functions and operations.
- Knowledge of environmental regulatory programs and requirements in California and the Bay Area.
- Knowledge of chemistry, hazardous materials, California Fire Code and hazard risk assessment experience.
- Must be comfortable working in a laboratory, clean room, and construction environments.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred qualifications
- Semiconductor experience preferred.
- Advanced degree in engineering, sciences or related field preferred.
- Professional environmental certifications desirable.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate, manage by influence, and drive results.
- Experience/skill in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of technical data, test results, reports, and plans; root cause and corrective/preventive action development skills.
- Ability to respond to and resolve complex challenges under pressure.

Lam offers a variety of work location models based on the needs of each role. Our hybrid roles combine the benefits of on-site collaboration with colleagues and the flexibility to work remotely and fall into two categories – On-site Flex and Virtual Flex. ‘On-site Flex’ you’ll work 3+ days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, with the opportunity to work remotely for the balance of the week. ‘Virtual Flex’ you’ll work 1-2 days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, and remotely the rest of the time.

Salary
CA San Francisco Bay Area Salary Range for this position: $92,000.00 - $211,000.00.
The above salary range for this position is relevant to applicants that reside or work onsite in the California, San Francisco Bay Area only. Salary offers will depend on factors that include the location you work from, your level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience and comparison to other employees already in this role. Actual salary may vary from salary offered due to numerous factors including but not limited to unpaid time off, unpaid leave, company mandated shutdown, and other relevant factors.
