Job Description

As an EFA Engineer at MTB, you will be responsible for Electrical Failure Analysis (EFA) to provide the direction of Physical Failure Analysis (PFA) and validation of tested fail parts, providing value-added engineering solutions, and driving continuous improvement projects in Test processes. You will also provide support in product test proliferation and excursion management activities.

In this role, you will leverage AI-enabled tools, Artificial Intelligence technologies, Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, AI-assisted analytics, and data-driven methodologies to accelerate failure diagnosis, enhance root cause investigations, improve engineering productivity, and support operational excellence. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve product quality, yield performance, reliability, and manufacturing effectiveness while contributing to Micron's AI transformation initiatives.

Responsibilities and Tasks

Safety and Compliance

  • Performs a JHA prior to starting an activity that may contain a potential hazard not already covered in current procedures.
  • Understands that he/she has the right and responsibility to hold other lab personnel accountable for following all safety and environmental procedures and that he/she should immediately address all violations with the employee or the employee's direct supervisor.

Supports Company and Department Objectives

  • Understands and supports company and department objectives and vision plans.
  • Successfully executes against assigned goals in support of objectives.
  • Proactively takes action on lagging goals in order to complete objectives on time.
  • Actively adopts AI-enabled, AI-supported, and data-driven solutions to improve engineering effectiveness, decision-making, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Yield Monitoring, Investigation & Response

  • Completes logouts and monitor notes according to published guidelines.
  • Enters monitor notes that accurately and thoroughly describe the issue.
  • Recognizes and proactively responds to and communicates new multiple-lot issues.
  • Utilizes knowledge of past and present issues to make informed decisions on probable sources of new yield issues.
  • Stays up to date on active die loss references and applies knowledge to die loss accurately.
  • Recalls historical die loss references to identify recurring issues and trends.
  • Is able to perform all data analysis techniques:a) where proficiency is expected based on currently published EFA TRAIN profile complete guidelines and b) any additional techniques that he/she is certified on beyond those required for the employee's current job mapping.
  • Uses the above expected data analysis techniques and any other available data to attempt root cause determination prior to requesting a wafer pull.
  • Utilizes AI-assisted analytics, AI-augmented data mining tools, Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, and other advanced analytical solutions where applicable to identify trends, accelerate failure pattern recognition, improve investigation efficiency, and support engineering decision-making.
  • Looks for additionally affected material when new issues are seen and generates affected lot lists when applicable.

For issues discovered during off-hours that warrant immediate attention, works with Shift Lead to develop a strategy to:

  • Attempt root cause analysis using whatever method is best suited for the issue (e.g., EFA, Datamining, AI-assisted analytics, Generative AI tools, Agentic AI solutions, or other engineering methodologies).
  • Communicate the issue to affected areas along with suggested actions.
  • Uses appropriate forms of communication depending on the priority of the item to alert all necessary parties (part owners, tool owners, process areas, PI, and up to Section Head for major yield detractors).
  • Communicates to Shift Lead and Part Owner when root cause is believed to be found so that a decision can be made on when, who, and how the process area(s) should be notified.
  • Updates standard reporting templates with as much detail as possible anytime a new issue is found or investigated. This should include root cause analysis completed to date, whether wafers have been pulled, investigation outcomes, and recommended actions.
  • Leverages Artificial Intelligence technologies to support reporting, technical documentation, knowledge management, trend analysis, and communication of engineering findings while ensuring technical accuracy and data integrity.
  • Uses available data to support conclusions and ensures findings are communicated to interested parties in a timely manner.

Performs Failure Analysis & Communicates Results

  • Is able to perform all EFA and reprocessing techniques:a) where proficiency is expected based on currently published EFA TRAIN profile complete guidelines and b) any additional techniques that he/she is certified on beyond those required for the employee's current job mapping.
  • Utilizes FA pass down along with direction from part owners and shift leads to prioritize and execute the most critical jobs.
  • Uses EFA system to receive and complete samples when work begins and ends.
  • Balances quality, quantity, and turnaround time of results to obtain an optimum end result.
  • Interprets electrical data, failure signatures, and test results to identify failure mechanisms and provide actionable engineering recommendations.
  • Applies AI-enabled engineering tools, workflow automation solutions, and advanced analytics platforms to improve failure analysis effectiveness, reduce cycle time, and enhance productivity.
  • Uses Generative AI, AI Assistants, Cloud Assist solutions, Agentic AI technologies, and Large Language Models (LLMs) where appropriate to support technical documentation, workflow optimization, data interpretation, and continuous learning.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities to apply Artificial Intelligence technologies in support of yield improvement, quality enhancement, manufacturing efficiency, reliability growth, and engineering excellence.
  • Drives continuous improvement initiatives to optimize failure analysis methodologies, laboratory effectiveness, and engineering processes.
