Director, Global Indirect Tax
The opportunity
Come join Unity and lead our India Tax Team and global indirect tax function. As Director, Global Indirect Tax, reporting to the Sr. Director, Global Tax, you will own indirect tax worldwide — US sales and use tax, global VAT/GST, digital services taxes, property tax and other non-income taxes — across more than 25 jurisdictions and roughly 870 filings a year. You will lead our Bengaluru-based tax team, hold final review and approval authority across the global filing calendar, and serve as Unity's authority on indirect tax for the business. We value curiosity and encourage new ideas that will challenge the status-quo!
Inclusion, at Unity, is driven by one overarching framework: Empathy, Respect, and Opportunity. In a collaborative, fast-growing environment, Unity is democratizing development, solving hard problems, and enabling the success of our community. At Unity, you'll make a difference.
Come join our incredible team!
What you'll be doing
- Leading and developing Unity's Bengaluru-based indirect tax team, and building the operating model, controls, and documented backup that a global function of this scale requires
- Owning the global indirect tax compliance calendar end to end - 100+ recurring obligations and approximately 900 filings a year across the US, Canada, EMEA, and APAC - as final reviewer and approver of record
- Owning US sales and use tax, global VAT/GST including the EU OSS regimes, digital services taxes across six regimes, and US property, franchise, use, and gross receipts taxes, as well as business license obligations
- Leading all global indirect tax audits, notices and assessments, and assessing and documenting indirect tax exposures under ASC 450 in partnership with the Sr. Director, Global Tax; Director, Tax Operations; and regional subject matter experts
- Owning global indirect tax accruals, account reconciliations, rollforwards and month-over-month flux analysis, and the indirect tax components of the global monthly and quarterly close process
- Serving as Unity's authority on indirect tax for Sales, Billing, Customer Success, Legal, Accounting, and Product, and owning the customer tax determination framework, including exemption certificates, VAT ID validation, reverse-charge determinations and refund adjudication
- Evaluating the indirect tax treatment of new and rebranded products and SKUs, and establishing a formal intake process so tax is engaged before launch rather than after
- Monitoring global indirect tax legislative change and leading Unity's readiness for it, including California software taxability, European and APAC e-invoicing mandates, and digital services taxes globally
What we're looking for
- 15 years of indirect tax experience in a Big 4 and/or a publicly traded multinational, including significant in-house indirect tax experience
- 5+ years managing a team, ideally in a public company setting or corporate tax department
- Deep working knowledge of US sales and use tax together with EMEA and APAC VAT/GST, and the judgment to own positions across both without day-to-day supervision
- Proven ownership of a multi-jurisdictional compliance calendar at scale, and demonstrated experience leading indirect tax audits and tax authority correspondence
- Degree in Accounting/Finance/Tax, Chartered Accountant, CPA, Tax Advisor or similar qualification
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain difficult tax technical concepts to a non-tax audience
- Willingness and ability to work Unity India's 2:00 pm – 11:00 pm IST shift, providing overlap with our EMEA and US West Coast teams
You might also have
- Experience at a software or SaaS company with high-volume, cross-border digital transactions and a complex product catalogue
- Experience with digital services tax regimes and with e-invoicing mandates in Europe, LATAM, and APAC
- Experience building an indirect tax function or transitioning scope into a global capability centre; direct experience with insourcing efforts is a strong plus
- Knowledge and experience in Indian direct and indirect tax compliance
- Experience with ASC 450 and with US GAAP close, reconciliation and reporting processes
- Demonstrated ability to identify and implement process improvements, including tax automation and AI-enabled workflows
