Director, Claims Management
About the Role
Uber is a technology company that is changing the way the world thinks about transportation. Insurance is a uniquely strategic function at Uber, and our claims organization operates differently from a traditional insurance carrier. Uber manages one of the largest and most complex commercial auto insurance programs in the world, supported by in-house claims, actuarial, legal, safety, data science, insurance, and technology expertise.
As Director, Claims Strategy & Management, you will be responsible for defining Uber’s claims handling philosophy and standards and ensuring our insurance carriers and TPAs effectively execute against them to achieve industry-leading outcomes across Uber’s U.S. auto insurance program.
This role sits at the intersection of claims strategy, process management, analytics, and carrier performance. You will work across Uber’s internal teams to establish preferred claims practices and use data and claims-management expertise to continuously improve those practices. Equally important, you will work directly with Uber’s insurance carriers, TPAs, and other external partners to drive adoption, improve execution, and ultimately reduce Uber’s total cost of risk.
What you’ll do
- Claims Strategy & Process:
- Develop and implement claims strategies, processes, and handling standards, evolving them based on results, emerging risks, and industry developments.
- Lead a team providing oversight and strategic guidance on high-severity and complex claims, using file-level insights to inform broader claims strategy.
- Use technology, data, and new claims-management approaches to improve outcomes, consistency, and efficiency.
- Carrier & TPA Performance:
- Build strong relationships with carrier and TPA claims leadership and drive improvements in claims practices, operating models, and execution to reduce Uber’s total cost of risk.
- Establish performance measures, identify gaps in execution against Uber’s claims standards, and drive corrective actions.
- Oversee compliance with claims-related contractual requirements and evaluate whether carrier and TPA staffing, expertise, and operating models support Uber’s standards.
- Claims Insights: Use claims data and file-level insights to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities, partnering across Risk Management, Actuarial, Legal, Safety, Product, and Public Policy to inform claims strategy, insurance program design, and business decisions.
- Industry Engagement: Build relationships with senior claims leaders and industry experts, bringing emerging claims, litigation, technology, and industry developments into Uber’s claims strategy.
- Executive Communication: Develop and communicate data-driven perspectives on claims performance, emerging trends, and financial implications to senior internal and external stakeholders.
Basic Qualifications
- 10+ years of claims or insurance experience across areas such as commercial auto, general liability, claims operations, analytics, or claims oversight.
- 5+ years of experience managing and leading teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- 6+ years of commercial auto claims experience, including bodily injury, high policy limits, UM/UIM, and complex coverage issues.
- 3+ years of frontline leadership experience managing liability claims.
- Experience managing and influencing insurance carriers, TPAs, or other external claims partners.
- Experience designing and implementing data-driven claims strategies.
- Experience with transportation, fleet, sharing-economy, or other complex commercial auto risks.
- Strong cross-functional influence and communication skills, including experience presenting complex claims issues to senior stakeholders.
- Experience managing or overseeing complex liability claims, including high-severity or litigated exposures.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing claims strategies, processes, or operational improvements.
- Experience using claims data and performance metrics to identify trends and drive actionable recommendations.
