About the team

The Customer Security team protects millions of eBay customers from digital identity crime.

We are a Customer Security product team specialising in Cybercrime & Abuse whose mission is to understand how digital identities are compromised, engineer intelligence from that understanding, and build the security capabilities that protect customers across the eBay platform.

Our products are the security intelligence, trust signals, detection capabilities, and data platforms that enable secure consumer identity at scale.

We continuously collect, enrich, correlate, and operationalise intelligence from cybercrime ecosystems - including phishing infrastructure, credential theft, infostealer malware, breached credential datasets, malicious infrastructure, identity abuse campaigns, and proprietary eBay telemetry. We transform that intelligence into production-grade security capabilities that protect customers throughout the identity lifecycle.

We partner closely with Identity Engineering, Authentication, Fraud, Trust, Product Security, and Risk teams to embed security directly into authentication, account recovery, high-risk customer journeys, and emerging identity technologies.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with deep security instincts and strong engineering capability to build the next generation of customer protection systems for digital identity.

This is an engineering-first security role.

You will build distributed systems, intelligence platforms, data pipelines, APIs, and security services that help eBay determine whether an identity should be trusted—not simply whether credentials are valid.

The role combines software engineering, cybercrime research, large-scale data engineering, security analytics, distributed systems, and adversarial thinking.

You should be comfortable investigating attacker techniques one day and deploying production systems the next.

You will help shape how eBay detects compromised identities, establishes trust in consumer devices, builds reusable identity intelligence, and secures the next generation of AI-assisted consumer experiences.

What You'll Do

Build Digital Identity Intelligence

  • Design and build production systems that transform cybercrime intelligence into reusable identity trust signals.
  • Engineer scalable data pipelines that ingest and enrich intelligence from phishing campaigns, infostealer ecosystems, credential marketplaces, breach datasets, malware telemetry, and internal eBay security signals.
  • Correlate external intelligence with proprietary customer telemetry to identify compromised identities before fraud or account takeover occurs.
  • Develop reusable security datasets that improve identity confidence across authentication, account recovery, fraud prevention, and high-risk customer interactions.

Build Device Intelligence

  • Engineer device intelligence platforms that distinguish trusted customer devices from attacker-controlled infrastructure.
  • Develop capabilities for device reputation, device binding, trusted device establishment, device graphing, hardware-backed trust, emulator detection, browser integrity assessment, and long-term device confidence.
  • Build scalable intelligence services that help detect compromised, cloned, automated, or synthetic devices.
  • Partner with Identity Engineering to integrate device intelligence directly into authentication and recovery experiences.

Engineer Identity Trust

  • Design reusable trust signals that continuously evaluate consumer identity throughout the customer journey.
  • Build systems that combine device intelligence, credential exposure, behavioral analytics, historical trust, transaction context, infrastructure reputation, and cybercrime intelligence into low-latency trust decisions.
  • Develop identity confidence models that enable adaptive authentication and risk-based customer protection.
  • Build APIs and services that allow identity platforms to consume security intelligence consistently across eBay.

Detect Digital Identity Compromise

  • Build systems capable of identifying: credential theft, account takeover, cookie theft, malicious automation, and identity impersonalsation among other things.
  • Translate research into production engineering capabilities that reduce customer harm at scale.

Partner Across Identity

  • Work closely with Identity Product and Engineering teams to embed security into: Authentication, Passkey and WebAuthn enrolment, Device trust, Account recovery, and Identity verification among other things.

Build for the Future of Consumer Identity

Areas of ownership include:

  • Human versus agent detection
  • Consumer agent identity
  • Identity binding between consumers and trusted agents
  • Delegated authority
  • Agent provenance
  • Agent trust scoring
  • Agent behavioral intelligence
  • Revocation and trust lifecycle
  • Detection of malicious or impersonating agents

This is a strategic investment area for the team and an opportunity to help define new security models for consumer platforms.

What Success Looks Like

Successful engineers on this team build security capabilities that become foundational services across eBay.

Examples include:

  • Reducing customer exposure to digital identity compromise.
  • Detecting compromised identities before account takeover occurs.
  • Building trusted device intelligence used across authentication and customer protection.
  • Delivering reusable identity trust signals consumed across multiple product surfaces.
  • Rapidly operationalizing intelligence from cybercrime ecosystems into customer protections.
  • Reducing false positives while improving customer safety.
  • Helping Identity Engineering deploy secure authentication experiences through stronger security intelligence.
  • Building scalable security platforms capable of operating across hundreds of millions of customer interactions.
  • Establishing trusted identity models for AI agents acting on behalf of consumers.

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong software engineering experience building distributed production systems.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, Java, Go, or similar modern languages.
  • Experience designing APIs, data platforms, distributed services, or event-driven systems.
  • Experience working with cloud-native infrastructure and modern observability practices.
  • Strong understanding of secure software engineering principles.
  • Ability to solve ambiguous technical problems through pragmatic engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following:

  • Consumer Identity Security: Digital identity protection, Account takeover prevention, Identity risk, Authentication security, Identity verification, Consumer authentication
  • Cybercrime Intelligence: Phishing ecosystems, Credential theft. Infostealer malware, Data breach intelligence, Threat intelligence engineering
  • Device Intelligence:  Device fingerprinting, Device reputation, Device graphing, Device attestation, Secure device identity
  • Identity Technologies: WebAuthn, Passkeys, FIDO2, OAuth, OpenID Connect, Session security, Identity federation, Adaptive authentication
  • AI & Agent Security:  Agent identity, Delegated authorization, Identity provenance, AI-native security, Autonomous security systems, Agent trust models, Human-versus-agent detection, AI-assisted investigation
