Design Engineer, Seating
Description
As an Engineer in the Seating Engineering Department, you will be responsible for Design Engineering from concept to End of Life, as well as problem solving of existing products.
Today’s seating commodities include structures, mechanisms, actuators, cushions, wire harnesses, controllers, sensors, software, trims and so on. However, future seating solutions are not limited to these. Progression is targeted. A seat can be defined as a product which enables comfortable support for vehicular occupants. In some sense, a seat can be viewed as a moving robotic structural art piece.
Team members typically play dual roles as experts and polymaths. Each team member typically uses their expertise as a superpower to complement the team. You shall be part of the Seating Engineering Team which resides within Tesla’s Vehicle Engineering Group,
As an integrated part of Tesla’s Vehicle Engineering team; you will conceptualize, design, engineer and manage Seating System parts and products. You shall be part and product responsible.
Primarily contributing to the team with your expertise on the integration of the multiple technologies that comprise the Seat Structural (stampings, welding, bolted joints, castings, engineering composites, etc.) and non-Structural components (Seat padding, upholstery, comfort devices, ornamentation hard trim, arm rest, head restraints and other aesthetic appointments). Hence a good understating and balance of the basics of Industrial Creative Design alongside Mechanical Engineering First Principles is critical to a proficient execution of this role.
The essence of your job would be to exceed the automotive industry expectations for safety and usability of the Seating systems, always based on a logical application of engineering fundamentals while employing the Design Engineering process for mass production solution which includes the following:
Responsibilities
- Problem understanding and definition
- Engineering Concept generation and evaluation
- Product strategy and architecture planning with consideration of Human Factors
- Negotiation, balancing and management of product attributes including safety, functionality, comfort, aesthetics, cost, mass, schedule, sustainability.
- Validation and optimization through including prototype making, physical testing, CAE simulations, design
- 3D model and 2D drawing creation
- Bill of Materials creation
- Detail design including datum & fixation strategy, GD&T, DFM and Bill of Materials
- Technical documentation creation for official use and communication
- Schedule and milestone management
Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Design engineering experience with demonstrated interest in multidisciplinary engineering. 3+Years of demonstrable experience proved through a detailed design engineering portfolio
- Hands on experience where you have built something. Design portfolio must include evidence of such
- Hand-sketching abilities. One of the many engineering languages
- Automotive engineering with seating experience is preferred but not mandatory
- Must have 3 years of experience with CAD software including: Catia V5, or Catia V6
- Must have 2 years of experience with managing suppliers for product development
- Must have 2 years of experience with overcoming design challenges for variety of materials and processes including stamping, injection molding, casting, or composites
- Must have 3 years of experience with designing kinematics, mechanisms, or electromechanical components
- Requires domestic travel up to 30% and international travel up to 10% [Travel will include supplier sites and Tesla manufacturing sites and will require interaction with Industrial Manufacturing equipment and settings]
